Study Support Centre

HTFC Study Centre
Background
Established in 1998, HTFC Study Centre one of over 100 centres involved in a national initiative called 'Playing for Success'. www.dfes.gov.uk/playingforsuccess/
This government project aims to raise achievement in literacy and numeracy through ICT (information communication technology) amongst 9 - 14 year olds by establishing study centres in professional football clubs and other sporting settings. In addition to helping children improve their maths and English skills we also aim to develop their confidence and self-esteem.

Funding
The centre is funded by the Department for Education and Skills and Kirklees Council, with contributions in kind from Huddersfield Town Football Club.
Staffing
The centre is run by a small team of experienced and qualified staff and supported by a large team of volunteer mentors from GreenheadCollege, HuddersfieldUniversity and Volunteering Kirklees.

Study Support
The centre currently works during the school year with 12 local partner primary schools from which groups of children come after school to the study centre at the stadium. They attend once a week for 10 weeks for a programme of activities on the computers and during that time they make considerable gains. Their literacy and numeracy activities are all accessed though our website www.htfcstudycentre.org . We also have a satellite study centre running at Thornton Lodge Neighbourhood Learning Centre two evenings per week to give even more children the opportunity to take part in the project.
