STUDY SUPPORT LAUNCH 'COMMUNICATING FOR SUCCESS'

Posted on: Thu 03 Sep 2009

The recent home victory over Southampton was the launch-pad for a pioneering new educational project at Huddersfield Town.

The 'Communicating for Success' initiative uses the power of football to help school children in Huddersfield to build self-confidence and to improve their education and communication skills. Made possible by communications giant BT and the Football Foundation, the UK's largest sports charity, the scheme also aims to enhance local youngsters' ICT skills and tackle local digital exclusion.

Held at Huddersfield Town Study Support Centre, the local pilot has involved 45 pupils aged 10-11 from Moorlands Primary School, Reinwood Community Junior School and Lindley Junior School, who have taken part in a range of activities celebrating the recent centenary of Huddersfield Town. Fifteen older children from nearby Salendine Nook High School have also acted as mentors to the younger children at a time when the primary age pupils are preparing for one of the big educational challenges of their young lives - the move up to secondary school.

Over a six week period, the staff at the Study Centre have taught the participants new ICT skills and offered support and encouragement as the youngsters filmed and edited their own 'Centenary Celebration' movies using the latest digital cameras and video-editing software. They have also produced photo stories and designed posters advertising a celebration event at The Zone where Club legend Andy Booth watched a showcase of the finished work and presented prizes and certificates from the football club.

BT and the Football Foundation jointly sponsored the Man of the Match award for the Saints game to officially mark the launch of the project at Huddersfield Town. Tom Farrell, Operations Manager for Openreach, represented BT at the match and took part in a pitchside photoshoot with a group of children that had participated in the project. He also awarded a goody bag of prizes from BT and the Football Foundation to each pupil that attended. Tom's daughter Lucy rounded off a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon by presenting the Man of the Match champagne to double scorer Jordan Rhodes.
