Goals from Jon Worthington, Jack Hunt (pictured) and David Heagney gave Paul Stephenson's reserve side all three points in their final reserve game of the season at Grimsby Town this evening.
The win at Blundell Park means that Town's Reserves now top the totesport.com League East Division by a single point with second-placed Leeds United having a game to play. United will have to win their game at home to Rotherham United next Tuesday in order to clinch the title, as Town's goal difference is far superior.
Manager Paul Stephenson lined his side up in a 4-4-1-1 formation for the game, with 'keeper Simon Eastwood protected by a back four of Academy scholars Liam Ridehalgh, Spencer Harris, Adam Bower and current reigning Player of the Year Andy Holdsworth at right-back. Second-year scholar Jack Hunt took up the right wing position with trialist Peter Gilbert on the left, leaving James Berrett to partner Lewis Nightingale in central midfield. Jon Worthington played in 'the hole' just behind main striker David Heagney.
Town took the lead just after five minutes when Jack Hunt was put through on goal courtesy of a good pass from midfield; the winger making no mistake in slotting the ball past Grimsby custodian Lund.
The Terriers doubled their advantage in the 23rd minute when James Berrett split the home defence with a superb pass to find Jon Worthington racing through. The experienced midfield replicated Hunt's earlier finish, placing the ball into the bottom corner of the goal from just inside the penalty area.
Midfielder Nightingale hit the post before Town went into the half-time break two goals up, but the home side got back into the game with their only goal in the 56th minute. Danny North and Tom Corner combined to release left winger Andy Taylor in on goal and he got a toe-end to the ball to divert the ball past Eastwood and into the net.
Grimsby pushed for an equaliser thereafter, but the Terriers sealed all three points with a goal in the 86th minute from under-18 top scorer David Heagney. The striker expertly controlled a long ball on his chest before spinning and firing past Lund from fifteen yards out.
