TOWN RESERVES 3 HARTLEPOOL 0
Danny Broadbent (27)
Luke Durham (54)
Keigan Parker (87)
Mick Docherty's reserve side maintained their 100% start to the totesport.com league with a win over Hartlepool United at the Galpharm Stadium this evening. Danny Broadbent scored in the first-half, with Academy winger Luke Durham (pictured) netting the second on his first start at second string level and Keigan Parker netting a third compliments of an assist by new boy Tom Denton.
Docherty's young side wasalways in control against the Monkey Hangers, with Alex Smithies barely tested in the Town goal. Tom Clarke was at his commanding best in defence and the versatile Andy Holdsworth did well, whereas Parker and Broadbent impressed up front. Former Wakefield man Denton made his first appearance in Town colours as a second-half substitute and didn't look out of place in attack - unselfishly playing Parker in for the last goal. Academy duo Durham and Luke Williams also deserve special mention for their first starts at this level.
The Terriers began the game in a 4-3-3 formation, with England under-17 international Alex Smithies playing in goal behind a back four of Dan Codman, skipper Robbie Williams, Tom Clarke and Dave Pickering. James Berrett took up the holding central midfield role behind the more advanced second-year scholar Luke Williams and Andy Holdsworth, with Academy winger Luke Durham and Keigan Parker either side of the central Danny Broadbent in attack.
The game was fairly even in the opening stages, with youngster Durham showing a couple of good touches down the Town right and Parker showing a tremendous burst of pace to breeze past Hartlepool skipper Tait on one enterprising 6th minute run. However, the nearest either side came to a goal was a bad back-pass from a Hartlepool defender that giant 'keeper Jan Budtz had to chest behind for a corner in the 8th minute.
A 15th minute Holdsworth corner from the left managed to evade around eight bodies in the six yard box before being cleared behind and from the resulting corner by Durham, Robbie Williams volleyed marginally over the bar from just outside the box.
The game was devoid of chances early on, but it was Town who were bossing possession. Hartlepool could not build any attacks, due mainly to the aerial dominance of Tom Clarke over strikers Mackay and Tymon, but did manage an effort at goal on the stroke of 18 minutes when left-back Robson crossed deep for right winger Foley who volleyed over when at full stretch twelve yards out.
GOAL - Town took the lead in the 27th minute through a neat turn and volley from striker Danny Broadbent. The goal came around from a left-sided corner taken by Andy Holdsworth, which was cleared at the near post to the edge of the box; midfielder Luke Williams was on hand to head the ball back into the area and although Hartlepool were claiming offside, a man coming off the far post played Broadbent on and he chested the ball down before spinning and volleying home from around ten yards out.
Town continued to dictate play, with winger Durham heading a left-wing cross from Codman straight at the goalkeeper in the 29th minute. However, away striker Tymon headed a decent right-wing free-kick over the bar when under heavy pressure fifteen yards from goal in the 33rd minute.
Right-winger Foley was looking like the main Hartlepool threat and fired the ball across the Town six yard box late on in the first-half before the combative Williams and Hartlepool's Power got involved in a skirmish along the right touchline that the referee had to break up.
Big defender Ben Clark did well to block another Broadbent effort after he turned well on the edge of the box in the 41st minute, but neither side managed to test the opposition goalkeeper before the referee drew a close to the half.

Hartlepool midfielder Martin Young was the first to try his luck in the second-half, but his 48th minute daisy-cutter from 25 yards rolled straight into the hands of Alex Smithies. Neither side had made any changes during the interval, but the away side started the second period in slightly brighter fashion.
Town winger Luke Durham tried his luck from outside the area with a low 52nd minute drive after picking up a good pass from right-back Pickering and had goalkeeper Budtz scampering across his goal to watch the ball go just wide.
GOAL - Town scored a second in the 54th minute through second-year scholar Luke Durham - his first at reserve team level. The move started when Keigan Parker put Danny Broadbent through on goal, who had done well to hold his run; 'Broady' tried to place the ball into the far corner but Budtz blocked the shot - right into the path of the onrushing Durham. He put the ball into the empty net, but managed to strike a post as he scored the goal!
SUB - Mick Docherty gave Tom Denton a first run out in the famous Blue and White stripes after 59 minutes, bringing the lofty striker onto replace Dan Codman. This change saw Andy Holdsworth slot into centre-back and Robbie Williams move to the vacant left-back slot, with Denton going into centre forward and Danny Broadbent moving to the left forward position.
The noise level at the Galpharm dropped noticeably as everyone concentrated on the striker's first touches as a Town player and he actually had the ball in the back of the net in the 64th minute. Keigan Parker was found inside the box by a clever Broadbent pass and when his volley was initially saved by 'keeper Budtz, he played the ball across the box for Denton to turn into the goal from all of two yards. Unfortunately, he was miles offside!
Parker was now operating as an orthodox striker alongside Denton and shot wide in the 67th minute after cutting inside from the left flank.
BOOKING - Referee Handley booked newcomer Tom Denton in the 68th minute after he challenged left-back Robson for the ball. The striker had gone to ground to win the ball, but he appeared to take all of it in the challenge and the decision angered the Town faithful.
BOOKING - Within a minute, Ben Clark was booked for dragging down former Wakefield man Denton after he had turned past him.
Goalscorer Durham scuffed an edge of the box volley badly wide in the 70th minute.
SUB - Mick Docherty made his final two changes in the 75th minute, bringing on Jack Hunt and Danny Barlow for Luke Durham and Luke Williams.
Andy Holdsworth did brilliantly to deny Hartlepool a goal in the 79th minute; winger Foley broke clear down the right side of the penalty area and forced Smithies into a save at the near post and just as it looked like an away player would tap in the rebound, Holdsworth got back to the far post and turned the ball around the post for a corner. At first it looked like he had awarded a penalty, but his decision was soon made clear.
Hartlepool's Jonny Rowell fired a 25 yard free-kick over the Town crossbar in the 81st minute after a foul by Tom Clarke.
Keigan Parker fired low but wide of goal in the 85th minute after good build-up play between Denton and Broadbent on the left; the debutant having easily won the initial flick-on from a big Smithies clearance. Had the ball been on target, 'keeper Budtz was nowhere near it.
GOAL - Town scored a third goal in the 87th minute through Keigan Parker, although he had a lot to owe to Tom Denton and Jack Hunt for the strike. Academy midfielder Hunt played a great through ball for Denton to run onto as Town broke and although he was through on goal on debut, he unselfishly passed to Parker who slotted the ball past the goalkeeper and into the far post.
