TOWN RESERVES 3 SCUNTHORPE 1
Town: Phil Jevons (5, 8 pen), Daniel Broadbent (70)
Scunthorpe: Jamie Bladen (57)
Town Reserves maintained their 100% record in the totesport.com League this season with an impressive 3-1 victory over fellow League One side Scunthorpe United at the Galpharm Stadium. Phil Jevons effectively sealed the game with a brace inside the first eight minutes before Scunthorpe hit a goal back, with Daniel Broadbent rounding off the scoring.
Jevons was in impressive form up front and was probably battling with midfielder James Berrett for the Man of the Match accolade; the Academy graduate played a very composed and assured ninety minutes in the Town engine room. In fact, there were good performances throughout the Town eleven.
Mick Docherty set his side out in a 4-4-2 formation, with goalkeeper Alex Smithies playing behind a back four of left-back Dan Codman, centre-backs Robbie Williams and Spencer Harris and right-back Jack Hunt. Malvin Kamara and Dan Broadbent occupied the right and left wings respectively with Lewis Nightingale partnering James Berrett in central midfield, leaving Luke Beckett to partner Phil Jevons in attack.
Tow n managed the first shot of the game inside twenty seconds; Malvin Kamara latching onto a Beckett flick-on and sending a low, swerving volley straight at Scunthorpe 'keeper Lillis.
GOAL - Town did take the lead in the 5th minute, with Phil Jevons netting his third totesport.com league goal in just two matches. The Terriers played the ball patiently down the right side, eventually feeding Malvin Kamara the ball; his quick, low ball across the box was good but it was the striker's touch that gave him a yard of space in which to shoot. 'Jevo's' original shot was blocked by the Scunthorpe 'keeper but he was on hand to poke the ball home.
GOAL - The Terriers scored a second goal just three minutes later. Spencer Harris played a raking pass out of defence that Phil Jevons did brilliantly to latch onto, poking the ball past the goalkeeper before having his legs taken from underneath him. He picked himself up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way from the spot to record his second of the game.
Scunthorpe still carried a threat and went very close to scoring in the 12th minute. Former Sheffield United striker Jonathan Forte robbed Town skipper Williams of the ball on the edge of the home penalty area and went around 'keeper Alex Smithies, but he scuffed his shot slightly and allowed left-back Codman to get back on the line and clear.
The game was fairly even thereafter, with experienced Iron defender Andy Crosby needing treatment to a facial injury on the 20-minute mark. Impressive midfielder James Berrett tried an innovative effort in the 25th minute having been released down the left side by a quick Smithies clearance, volleying the ball towards goal from fully 30 yards. Unfortunately, his effort drifted over the bar.
The visitors got more into the game as the half progressed, but couldn't craft a real chance. The battle between Academy scholar Hunt and the speedy Forte was intriguing and the 17-year old was giving just as good as he got.
Big striker Ben May tried his luck from 25-yards in the 35th minute and hit the bar with a well-struck drive, with Alex Smithies diving full-length and watching on as the ricochet drifted harmlessly over the crossbar. A minute later Jamie Bladen tried his luck from similar distance but with less accuracy - the ball went about fifteen yards wide of Smithies' right-hand post.
Scunthorpe defender Jake Picton caught the eye - largely thanks to his shock of curly hair - and headed a 39th minute corner straight at Alex Smithies at the back post.
The last action of the first-half saw Spencer Harris charge forward from the back before passing to Luke Beckett, whose chipped effort drifted well over the bar.
HALF-TIME: TOWN RESERVES 2 SCUNTHORPE UNITED 0
Town custodian Smithies had to be alert early in the second-half after Jonathan Forte broke into the Town area as early as the 47th minute; the England Under-17 goalkeeper came out and blocked his shot from an acute angle.
Phil Jevons tried an acrobatic bicycle kick that would have rounded off a superb hat-trick in the 49th minute after Lewis Nightingale found space down the right and crossed to the near post, but he sent the ball flying over the crossbar.
The lively Forte headed a Bladen corner towards the near post in the 52nd minute but saw Nightingale comfortably clear to safety.
In the 53rd minute, Luke Beckett went very close to extending Town's lead. Good interplay between the front pairing of Beckett and Jevons released James Berrett into space just beyond the halfway line and he advanced with the ball before playing a clever reverse ball into the path of Beckett, who curled inches wide of the left-hand post from the edge of the box.
GOAL - Scunthorpe found a way back into the game with a goal in the 57th minute. Right winger Peter Winn robbed Dan Codman of the ball in the left-hand corner before crossing deep into the box for midfielder Jamie Bladen, who placed his shot wide of Alex Smithies and into the bottom left corner of the goal from around 15 yards.
Town tried to fight back immediately, with Beckett hitting a firm 20-yard volley straight at the opposition goalkeeper three minutes later.
SUB - Both sides made their first changes of the evening in the 63rd minute; Scunthorpe replacing Michael Lea with Danny Wright and Town replacing Luke Beckett with Dave Pickering.
Town's change saw Danny Broadbent move forward to partner Jevons in attack, Lewis Nightingale move onto the left wing, Jack Hunt revert to central midfield and the substitute go to his familiar right-back role.
Soon afterwards, Nightingale came in off the flank and sent a right-foot volley flying over the bar from 25 yards.
Phil Jevons hit a stunning drive from fully 30 yards on the stroke of 67 minutes that caught 'keeper Josh Lillis - son of former Town man Mark - by surprise, but the custodian did very well to scramble across and tip the ball onto the post.
GOAL - Town scored a great goal on the break in the 70th minute through Danny Broadbent, but credit was due to midfielder James Berrett for his sublime through ball. Having robbed striker Ben May of the ball in the centre circle, he played a great through pass inside centre-back Crosby for the speedy Broadbent - who advanced and lifted the ball cleverly over the advancing 'keeper with his weaker left foot.
SUB - Mick Docherty made two substitutions in the 73rd minute; Leigh Franks replaced Robbie Williams and Danny Barlow came on for Malvin Kamara.
Immediately after the changes, Danny Broadbent collected a Phil Jevons knock-down and drove the ball powerfully over the bar from 25 yards out.
Tall Scunthorpe midfielder Ian Morris hit a long range drive straight at Alex Smithies in the 78th minute but from the goalkeeper's kick Town went back on the attack; Lewis Nightingale playing a neat one-two with Broadbent before hitting a shot straight at the goalkeeper, who had spread himself well.
Broadbent was impressive having moved to his favoured strike position and hit another cracking drive straight at the goalkeeper with nine minutes left.
Jonathan Forte then collected a long clearance from his own goalkeeper in the 83rd minute before hitting a looping half volley that Smithies did very well to tip over the crossbar.
Jevons did very well to release Jack Hunt on a 86th minute breakaway following a Scunthorpe corner; the second-year Academy scholar played a smart one-two with striker Broadbent, but screwed his 25-yard effort badly wide of goal.
