RESERVE OPENER AT ELLAND ROAD TONIGHT

Posted on: Tue 19 Aug 2008

Town's reserve team play their first game of the new Central League season tonight when they travel to Elland Road to play Leeds United in a 7pm kick-off.

Mick Docherty is taking a strong squad to face our West Yorkshire rivals, including two trialists - goalkeeper Paul Gerrard and defender James Smith.

Whereas former Sheffield United shot-stopper Gerrard has been training with the squad since pre-season, full-back Smith is relatively new. A former Liverpool trainee and professional, he only made one appearance for the Anfield outlet before going out on loan to Ross County and then Stockport County before making the move permanent in December 2007.

The 22-year old played 30 games for County as they were promoted to League One last season, but rejected an improved deal at the conclusion of the season.

Able to play at right-back or centre-back, Smith reads the game well and is strong defensively.

New signing Tom Denton is also expected to travel with the squad for tonight's 7pm kick-off.
