TOWN RESERVES 3 LEICESTER CITY 0
The performance of Town's Reserve side echoed that of the first-team of late and they fully deserved their 3-0 victory over a young Leicester City side at the Galpharm Stadium this evening. The goals came from Lucas Akins (pictured), Tom Clarke and substitute Luke Malcher but there were impressive performances all over the pitch for the Terriers and coach Martyn Booty must be very pleased with his team as they finished the Pontin's Holidays League season on a four match unbeaten streak.
Martyn Booty's side lined up in a 4-4-2 formation for the game with England under-18 'keeper Alex Smithies protected by a back four of left-back Danny Codman, centre-backs Tom Jackson and Tom Clarke and skipper Aaron Hardy at right-back. Danny Racchi and Malvin Kamara occupied the right and left wings respectively with Mitchell Bailey partnering Lewis Nightingale in central midfield. Up front, Lucas Akins partnered the returning Phil Jevons.
Mitchell Bailey was the first to try a shot in the fourth minute after a Danny Racchi left wing corner was only half-cleared at the near post, but his speculative half-volley from fully 30 yards went way over the Leicester crossbar.
Leicester fought back and had the ball in the net on the stroke of five minutes, but big striker Ricky Sappleton blatantly impeded 'keeper Smithies when trying to latch onto a looping right-wing cross dropping just underneath the Town crossbar.
Racchi and Kamara swapped wings early on in the half and the Academy graduate made several positive runs down the left side having been released by clever diagonal balls by the impressive Lewis Nightingale. However it was the giant Sappleton who had the next chance in the 11th minute; it looked like he fouled Tom Clarke to latch onto a high looping clearance and get in on goal, but nothing was given and Alex Smithies had to come out and block the shot from fifteen yards.
Town immediately broke away from Clarke's clearance, with Lucas Akins skinning centre-back Garner twice on his way into the Leicester area. Unfortunately for him, he scuffed his left-foot shot from around fifteen yards out wide of the 'keeper's left-hand post.
Phil Jevons squeezed a right-footed shot wide of the far post three minutes later after a clever pass into the box from Aaron Hardy.
GOAL - The Terriers took a deserved lead in the 18th minute through Lucas Akins. The goal came about after a good run down the left from winger Kamara; he used his pace to go past right-back Magunda on the outside before squaring the ball low across goal, where Akins turned neatly on the edge of the six yard box to place the ball into the far corner.
Akins was proving to be quite a handful for Leicester centre-back Rowe-Turner and it was his persistence that forced the opposition skipper into an error two minutes later. Danny Racchi tried to capitalize on his poor clearance under pressure by lobbing the goalkeeper from 40 yards, but only succeeded in firing over the bar.
Leicester midfielder Lee Cox put an edge of the box volley into the top tier of the Panasonic Stand two minutes later in what was a rare attack for the opposition.
Mitch Bailey wasted a good chance after a glorious Racchi cross in the 25th minute - completely missing his kick when attempting a far-post volley - before Nightingale's attempted curler from the edge of the box drifted wide three minutes later.
Danny Racchi was having a very lively first-half and he almost scored a brilliant goal in the 32nd minute. He picked up a pass on the left - having switched wings with Kamara once more - from Danny Codman before spinning and shooting from the corner of the box, forcing 'keeper Pentney into a save to his left.
GOAL - Town scored a second a minute later through centre-back Tom Clarke. Danny Racchi was fouled down the right side by left-back Joe Cobb - who picked up a booking for the challenge - allowing the left-footed Tom Jackson to swing in an in-swinging free-kick. At first it looked like the delivery was too deep, but the younger Clarke brother drifted to the back post to lose his man and nodded the ball past the goalkeeper from an acute angle to extend the Town lead.
Leicester number 7 Ashley Chambers then forced Alex Smithies into a flying save two minutes later; his free-kick from the edge of the Town box was arrowing towards the top left corner, but the England Under-18 goalkeeper launched himself across and brilliantly tipped the ball over the bar.
SUB - Leicester made their first change in the 38th minute, with Craig King replacing Ryan Beswick.
Leicester's Scott Garner should have done better with a header from a Cobb left-wing cross that he looped straight to Alex Smithies two minutes later but the Terriers went on a speedy break and immediately threatened at the other end, with Jevons inches away from converting an excellent cross from Kamara on the right.
Lucas Akins outmuscled centre-back Garner before scuffing a shot wide of goal in the 43rd minute in the last meaningful action of an action-packed first-half.

It was Akins who had the last shot of the first-half and the first of the second 45 after he tested the goalkeeper with a curling right-footed effort from the left-hand edge of the area four minutes in. He had been released by a clever pass from strike partner Jevons, but it was his clever turn inside full-back Magunda that created the space for the shot, with the shot-stopper pushing the ball behind for a corner.
A great run down the right from Malvin Kamara in the 54th minute saw the winger fly past left-back Cobb before he intelligently pulled the ball back to the penalty spot for Lewis Nightingale. The young midfielder took a touch before skipping around the stricken goalkeeper and hammering the ball towards goal, but a Leicester defender did very well to get back on his line and head the ball over the crossbar.
SUB - Luke Malcher came on for the impressive Nightingale in the 58th minute in Town's first change of the evening. This move saw Danny Racchi switch to central midfield, with the substitute playing on the right wing.
Danny Racchi tested the goalkeeper with a curler from the edge of the box two minutes later, but his shot had neither the power nor the direction to seriously test Carl Pentney.
The only Leicester threat was the physical power of striker Sappleton and he did well in the 62nd minute when he flicked the ball over the head of defender Tom Jackson to get in on goal, but he screwed his shot both over and wide from an acute angle inside the area.
SUB - Leicester made their second change in the 63rd minute when Jorrin John replaced Sappleton, who had taken a knock.
Ashley Chambers drifted a 25-yard free-kick comfortably over Smithies' bar in the 68th minute after a foul by Jackson on Leicester's Craig King.
SUB - Daniel Broadbent came on for the returning Phil Jevons in the 75th minute.
Adam Chambers flashed a speculative long-range shot over the crossbar a minute later.
GOAL - Despite the visitors enjoying their best period of the game in the last ten minutes, Town grabbed a third in the 78th minute through substitute Luke Malcher. Fellow sub Danny Broadbent claimed a loose ball just inside the Leicester half before advancing and sliding a pass ahead of Malcher, who entered the area to the right of goal and drove a low shot to the goalkeeper's right side.
SUB - Town's final change of the evening came in the 80th minute, with Spencer Harris replacing Mitchell Bailey.
The Terriers had the better of the final ten minutes, controlling the ball very well and creating a quite a few half chances. Leicester put a few balls into the Town box but found Alex Smithies in very decisive form; the young goalkeeper commanding his area brilliantly to keep the Foxes at bay.
