TOWN RESERVES 0 WBA 0
This afternoon's Reserve fixture against West Bromwich Albion at the Galpharm Stadium may have finished goalless, but the better news for Town fans was that the quartet making their return from injury - Jon Worthington (pictured), Robbie Williams, Chris Brandon and Simon Eastwood - came through the game with flying colours.
Town were sporting their orange third kit as they lined up in a 4-4-2 formation for the start of the game, with returning 'keeper Simon Eastwood protected by a back four of Robbie Williams, Shane Killock, right-back Danny Racchi and James Berrett - the midfielder playing at centre-back today. Matthew Young and Chris Brandon occupied the left and right wings respectively, with Club Captain Jon Worthington and Mitchell Bailey operating in the centre. Up front, Dave Heagney made his first start at Reserve team level alongside Luke Malcher, who turned 19 today.
Heagney had the first shot on goal inside the third minute - picking up a loose West Brom pass around 25 yards out before striking a firm right-foot shot straight at visiting 'keeper Luke Steele.
Town then had the ball in the back of the net after 6 minutes, but the goal was ruled out by the assistant referee. Luke Malcher was fed the ball down the left channel by Jon Worthington - who had started the game in lively fashion - before he in turn released Chris Brandon down the left flank. 'Brando' then stood the ball up to the back post where fellow winger Matthew Young headed home, but the linesman deemed that the ball had already crossed the dead ball line for a goal kick.
Town were definitely the better side in the opening twenty minutes, with Heagney in particular doing well against the much more experienced Shelton Martis in the Baggies' defence. However, Simon Eastwood had to be alert to smother the ball at the feet of away striker Lake-Gaskin in the 20th minute.
James Berrett could have tried his luck from just inside the area from a Robbie Williams corner in the 25th minute, but he delayed his shot and the physical ex-Hibernian defender Martis muscled him out.
Jack Compton stung Easty's palms with a long-range effort after 29 minutes in a period where West Brom finally got a foothold in the game. Midfielder Compton tried his luck again from similar range four minutes later, but still got no change out of the Town custodian.
An excellent deep cross from Danny Racchi created the best chance of the half with 6 minutes left; the right-back's great 35 yard ball picking out Dave Heagney at the far post. The Academy striker looked to cushion his header into the top corner, but the ball drifted harmlessly over Luke Steele's bar.

Encouragingly, there were no changes to either side at half-time - meaning that the returning quartet of Worthington, Eastwood, Williams and Brandon continued on past the 45 minute mark.
Robbie Williams tried his luck with a free-kick from an acute angle two minutes into the half, with the away 'keeper expecting a cross into the box after Luke Malcher was fouled out wide. However, the former Barnsley man dragged his shot wide of the near post.
Goalkeeper Luke Steele seemed to be having trouble with his kicking in the second-half and almost presented Mitchell Bailey with an opportunity to capitalize, but he screwed his shot up into the air.
SUB - West Brom made the first substitution of the game after 53 minutes, replacing Steffan Morrison with Michael Nardiello - cousin of Daniel.
Midfielder David Worrall then hit the bar two minutes later after a clever pass from a West Brom midfielder before Joshua Knight forced Simon Eastwood into an excellent close range reaction save in the 55th minute when he should have scored.
The impressive Compton then put another long-range effort narrowly wide of the right-hand post during what was the visitor's best period of the game so far.
SUB - John Dungworth made Town's first substitution after 62 minutes; Spencer Harris came on at right-back for Danny Racchi, who had gone down with an injury moments earlier after falling awkwardly.
Robbie Williams then gave the on-looking Town fans a taste of what to expect with a tremendous free-kick after 70 minutes. Williams himself was fouled by an opponent just to the left of goal and his pacy, bending free-kick was impressively tipped onto the bar by 'keeper Steele.
Town then scored in the 71st minute after a rasping Jon Worthington drive from the edge of the box came off Steele's chest to be tapped in by Luke Malcher, but the lineman's flag ruled out the goal for the second time in the game.
BOOKING - Matthew Young was then booked after 72 minutes after tripping Jack Compton from behind.
SUB - The second West Brom substitution a minute later saw Ryan Nichols replaced by Anthony Bruce.
SUB - Town then made their own change, switching Stephen Brook and Dave Heagney. This change saw Chris Brandon join Luke Malcher up front, with Brook operating on the left wing.
Town were back on top by this stage, but still couldn't find the goal that would win the game.
SUB - West Brom made their final substitution after 83 minutes when Joshua Knight was replaced by Michael Nardiello.
Scott Mason then saw his header from a West Brom corner cleared off the line by Spencer Harris at the back post with two minutes left. Harris had done very well since coming on in the second-half, supporting Matthew Young on the right-flank to good effect.
There was a moment worthy of mention as the fourth official signaled two minutes of added time (pardon the pun) - Jon Worthington ran back a full 30 yards to close down West Brom left-back Tininho after an attack broke down. His whole performance was very impressive considering the lay-off he has had and the Town skipper still looked full of energy as the referee brought the game to a goalless close.
