LEE PREVIEWS TOUGH TRANMERE TEST

Posted on: Fri 27 Jan 2012

Huddersfield Town Manager Lee Clark spoke to htafc.com ahead of his side's npower League 1 game at Tranmere Rovers on Saturday to give his thoughts on the game.

The Town boss has added new loan signing Sean Morrison to his squad for the fixture and admitted he was delighted when the opportunity arose to bring the 6' 4" tall centre back to the Club for a second spell.

"Sean adds power, strength and competition for places. He's a top player - he showed that last year, but when he came we had a few clean sheets," Lee explained.

"We were actually in the running when Reading bought him from Swindon, because he is an outstanding young player. We tried to compete, but the lure of a big Championship club took him there.

"When he came in last year he was actually even better than we thought from what we had seen of him. I think Sean played a huge part in that, because the other defenders saw how good he was in training and knew that one slip-up would cost them their place. Even though he didn't get on the field of play, he made a huge impact on everyone."

Clark also threw the defensive gauntlet down to his side, asking for a higher ratio of clean sheets in the Club's final 19 games of the League 1 calendar.

"That's why Charlton have just taken six points from two huge games - they won them with two free kicks and two clean sheets. I don't know how the games went in terms of general play, but they could win them by a single set piece because they kept clean sheets. Teams that are successful do that.

"We showed absolutely fantastic character and determination to win the game against Brentford last weekend, because we had put ourselves in a real hole by playing very, very poorly. I've watched the DVD three or four times this week and we probably played worse than I realised at the time. However, we showed real togetherness to win the game and in the second half we did the right things.

"Ultimately I'm an attack-minded manager; I want to win and play attractive football that creates chances which is why we play with wingers, but teams that win Championships and get automatic promotion have a fair amount of one, two and three-nil's to their name. That's what we have to start doing on a more regular basis.

"I'll tell you now - if we give teams two goal head starts in our remaining 19 games, we won't be doing another Brentford because that doesn't happen all the time."

Town travel to the Wirral on Saturday without the services of winger Gary Roberts, who underwent surgery on a double hernia earlier this week.

"I know the surgeon that performed Gary's surgery very well because he did my last operation as a player. I also had the operation that Gary underwent numerous times during my career. It's quite a simple procedure now, but it's been a busy week for him because his girlfriend gave birth to a little girl this week too!

"That surgeon's claim to fame is that he got Paul Scholes back playing within 14 days of his hernia operation. Gary's been doing really well, but if Paul Scholes is still available we'll take him!

"Being sensible though, the realistic timescale for Gary is anywhere between three and six weeks - that all depends on the individual. He actually starts work on Friday; he's back in starting his rehab because you have to get moving straight away to get the core muscles strong. He'll be in every day to make sure he's back as quickly and safely as possible, but we're not putting a timescale on it."

'Robbo's' absence could open the door for the likes of Danny Cadamarteri or Donal McDermott to stake a place in the side.

"Danny has been terrific since he's come back into the fold in the last few weeks, either starting or coming off the bench; he has made some huge contributions to us. He's looked really bright in training, so he's ready for an opportunity.

"There could be an opening for Donal McDermott too and he has to be prepared to take that, because I've shown in the past that if a player comes in and does well it is their place to lose. The person who has been unlucky, whether it is through injury or suspension, has to wait their turn again and that has been shown from the Captain all the way through the squad. People have to take their chances."

Apart from Roberts' absence, the squad is in good shape - with several injured players returning to the fold.

"Lee (Novak) is good; Scott Arfield and Lee trained on Thursday, so hopefully there will be no reaction. Alex Smithies is doing brilliantly too; he came through an in-house game on Tuesday and we have a behind closed doors Development game at Blackburn Rovers next Tuesday for him."

A trip to Prenton Park is never an easy one and having watched Saturday's opponents in the flesh recently, Lee knows what to expect from Les Parry's side.

"Tranmere are very tough. I went to watch them against Rochdale last week and Les (Parry) has got them terrifically fit; every player works extremely hard, fighting for everything and going until the final whistle. They have some tricky set plays too; they work extremely hard on them and that's something you have to be aware of. We know we are in for a tough afternoon but we've done well away from home, scoring lots of goals and recording some terrific results."

Town have fared well against Rovers in recent times, but Clark brushed past results aside:

"Records and runs are for the press to talk about - if football was that simple I might as well go and enjoy a weekend away and let the lads get on with it!"

Lee has a lot of time for the man in the opposing dugout this weekend, but he wasadamant that factor makes no difference come 3pm on Saturday:

"I saw Les on Tuesday at a reserve fixture. He came up to me and said he'd stand next to me, because whoever we were looking at he wanted! However, it doesn't matter who's in the opposition dugout; whoever we're up against, I want to win. What I will say is that he's a cracking guy and he's done terrifically well at Tranmere - I've got a lot of time for him and his staff."
