MITCHELL: "WE DESERVED TO WIN"
Caretaker First Team Coach Graham Mitchell gave htafc.com his thoughts on the superb 1-0 victory at Southend United:
"I thought we played well today and that we deserved to win. We should have probably come in a goal up at half-time as some of the football that we played in the first-half was the best we have since Gerry and I took over the job.
"The second half was a little bit different because we sat the wing-backs in a little bit more after the goal to make sure we consolidated, which led them on a little bit; however, I didn't feel we were under pressure during any point in the game.
"I always felt the goal was coming and I knew that either Craney or Michael would get on the end of something in the box, so it didn't surprise me. To be honest, the penalty save didn't surprise me either because I've seen Alex do that before - point to one side before going that way and saving it. As soon as the lad started his run-up, I felt that Alex would save it. Football-wise, I thought we were the better side and I felt it would have been an injustice if they had got back in the game.
"Alex is a confident lad who has great ability and potential. He deserved his place in the team and he has done well today, helping us to get three points. He had a tough debut here last season but he has some good experience for a player of his age and he has a lot of character.
"Our form has been down to the players and to be fair, they have been absolutely magnificent since Gerry and I took over. It's nice that they played as well as they did and won today for Gerry, which they really wanted to do. It was nice to be in control of the team today, but it would have been nicer to have Gerry here. I know he will have been listening at home this afternoon.
"We have a good side here, with some good players, and I think we are in the top ten now. We have some tough games over Christmas but in my opinion, these lads are good enough to be in with a shout come the end of the season.
"It was nice to see Lee Clark down here and he came into the dressing room at full time and congratulated the players and me. I'm sure the lads are looking forward to working with him. I now hope that the players continue to play like that for the new manager and I hope he takes us forward. He has a good group of players to work with and they have shown what they are capable of today. I know that Gerry has already spoken to Lee and both Gerry and I wish the new management team every success.
"I'll now go back to the Academy and do my job as youth team coach and I'll offer the new manager and his staff all the support they need. I'm employed by Huddersfield Town, I love the Club and I've told the Chairman that I'm happy to work here in any capacity."
