JEPSON: "THEY WENT ABOUT IT IN AN EXCELLENT MANNER"
htafc.com talked to Town's Assistant Manager Ronnie Jepson following the 3-1 win at Swindon's County Ground and he explained that the lads got exactly what they deserved for their performance - all three points.
"The lads went about today in an excellent manner," Ronnie told the Club's official website. "They've had a few good performances of late - at Oldham and at home to Leicester - where they've not got what they deserved and the manager just asked the lads to carry on in a similar vein. They did that today and created numerous opportunities, especially being away from home. Without being disrespectful to Swindon Town, we could have easily had five or six goals today if we had been a bit more clinical, but you can't really moan at three away from home.
"We were always confident we could open them up with the quality we have and once the lads have that belief in them and when they are playing in the way that the manager wants, we will score goals. It was nice for Liam to get us going with the first goal, but having said that we could have easily had two or three more in the first-half.
"It's about having a good work ethic and wanting to do well; that's what we try to instil in these boys. The sooner that comes to the fore the better and I think it is. We have thrown a lot of bodies together and there is still room for improvement. Some will stay and some will go, but that's how football is. We'll carry on until we get where we want to be - at the top of the League and into the next division.
"We scored two great goals after Liam's opener. Flynny's was a brilliant strike as was Gary Roberts', but they are capable of doing that as they are both quality players. Gary might be disappointed that he didn't have a couple more today and Flynny may have wanted a couple more pull-backs to the edge of the box, as I've seen him score from 25-30 yards man times before. The nice thing, other than the goals, is that we saw how hard the lads worked today.
"We did take our foot off the gas a little for the last fifteen minutes, being 3-0 up away from home, and they threw caution to the wind. The only downside is that we would have liked a clean sheet today and I think we deserved that; the back four were smashing and worked extremely hard, along with the midfield and the strikers."
Ronnie paid particular tribute to 'keeper Matt Glennon for his first-half penalty save from Simon Cox - and resulting assist for Gary Roberts' goal!
"We knew that their home form wasn't the best and we expected them to come out all guns blazing, so Matty made a couple of vital stops - just as their 'keeper did. The penalty save was a good stop and he followed it up with a great strike up field to Robbo, who produced an excellent finish. I was pleased for Matty today and he also came to claim one or two, which was good. I have to say thought that I didn't he was under anywhere near the amount of pressure that their 'keeper was."
Midfielder Ian Craney was thought to be out of today's game with a hamstring injury, but turned in an excellent, busy performance in Town's midfield after passing a fitness test as Ronnie explained:
"Both Ian Craney and Jon Worthington came down to the ground this morning for fitness tests, as Worthy picked up a knock in training yesterday. Both of them wanted to play as they are those types of characters - the type we want at the Club. Thankfully they both came though it and it was nice to have them on the field.
"I thought they all had good games and some of the play we produced - getting it in wide areas and the movement from Craney and the other midfield lads - was nice to see. When you come away from home, you won't see many teams having as much of the ball as we had and perhaps we should have turned that possession into one or two more goals.
"Overall, it's a good three points but we can continue to work on one or two things. We have games coming up thick and fast and we are getting there, but it doesn't happen straight away - you have to work hard at it. Everyone has to be patient, as we can't work any harder than we are."
'Rocket Ron' finished off by paying tribute to Town's excellent travelling support at the County Ground today.
"The fans were brilliant today. They could see the team's creativity, willingness to get behind the ball and get on it and play and that's what we all want from the players."
