RITCHIE: "WE WERE COMFORTABLE"
htafc.com caught up with Town boss Andy Ritchie in the aftermath of today's FA Cup sponsored by E.ON Second Round victory over Grimsby Town at the Galpharm Stadium to get his thoughts on the impressive performance of his team.
"I've got to be happy; I thought we were comfortable from start to finish," the Gaffer told the official website. "At half-time things start to come back into our minds about Leyton Orient last weekend, but we stayed confident and could have had one or two in the first half.
"It's good to be in the hat for the Third Round. We played very well from start to finish, although we started a little bit too slowly and we are a good side when we push the ball around at a good tempo. They sat off us and gave us a little bit too much possession, so when we started to move it quickly we began to make inroads.
"Malvin's movement off the ball was making space to allow Frank to get forward and we had a lot of joy down our right-hand side; it was just unfortunate that we couldn't cap it off with a goal in the first-half. I don't think Matt's had a save to make but I've complimented him just now on his kicking.
"We felt that we needed Boothy's height today to combat (Nick) Fenton's height from set-pieces, as that was our downfall in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at Blundell Park. He's also had a great month for us in general, so he partnered Phil up front. We've brought 'Jevo' in and I just feel that we need to play him. He could have had his hat-trick just before he came off, but he admits that his legs had gone and he got it stuck under his feet a little bit. He's made a real impact, but I wouldn't want to single him out as there were tremendous performances all over; Malvin put a good stint in for us again, Ronnie and Andy (Holdsworth) were great in midfield, the centre-backs were superb - I could go on as everyone played well today. It's nice when it all fits together and you don't have a goal scored against you.
"With the logistically difficult week we have coming up, it was nice to be able to give Danny (Cadamarteri) a bit of a rest. He'll be involved on Wednesday.
"It was also nice to select Robbie Williams on the bench today. We thought he gave us a little bit more of an option, as he could have come on for Joe (Skarz), on the left wing or even as a left-sided centre-half. He wanted to start the game, but with the players doing so well at the moment he'll have to wait his chance! I still feel he needs another game, but it's good that he's eager to play.
"Malvin had two or three shots in the first-half and was unlucky not to score. It was lucky that he miss-hit the cross for Jevo's second goal as he hit one a bit cleaner just after it and nobody could get to it, which we've had a bit of a joke about! He's gaining in confidence every week and once he starts to believe himself, he'll be a player.
"It was a good performance today. The lads are very buoyant at the moment as they should be; we've had one defeat all month and we shouldn't have lost that. We now have to ensure that we keep moving onwards and upwards, starting with what promises to be a difficult midweek game at Southend.
"It would be great for the Club if we could get a Premiership side now, just as it would be great for me and the rest of the coaching staff to pit our wits against a team from the higher echelons. It would be great for the players to go out and play against top professionals too, as they should aspire to do."
The draw for the Third Round of the FA Cup sponsored by E.ON takes place live on BBC One at 3.10pm on Sunday; Town are ball number 58!
