Boothy is forging a partnership with Luke Beckett in Town's attack |
Andy Booth celebrated signing his new contract in the best possible way last weekend - by scoring two goals against Gillingham at the Galpharm in the 3-1 win.
The new deal will see the Huddersfield legend stay with his hometown Club until the end of next season and the 33-year old was quick to show his pleasure with the extension.
"I'm very pleased. I didn't want this season to be my last and it's very nice to get another year. At the conclusion of this contract I'll be 35 and even then, I'd never-say-never about playing on. If at that point I'm still feeling alright and the manager were to offer me another contract then I'm sure I'd accept it! You never know - it's a long time off yet and obviously playing takes it's toll on the body, so we will have to see.
"I was pleased to cap it off with two goals at the weekend, but the most important thing was to get the three points. I was also pleased that Luke (Beckett) got a goal too because he deserved it."
Boothy mentioned his strike partner without any prompting, and went on to describe how happy he was playing with the ex-Oldham striker.
"The partnership is coming along now as we have played a few games together. Luke and I always enjoy playing together - this was the case when he came on loan (during the 04/05 season) and it's the case now. We got quite a bit of success during his loan spell and although it has taken a while this time, we've done well together in the last four or five games.
"Luke works very hard during games and gets through a lot of work. It was difficult when we were playing with one striker earlier in the season as you have to do twice the work and it's great to work with Luke as part of a two."
After last Saturday's game Gillingham manager (and ex-strike partner of Booth) Ronnie Jepson described Andy as 'the best target man in the division' - something the ex-Sheffield Wednesday striker was grateful for.
"That was very kind of Ronnie, but I feel I must point out that we are still good friends following his time here! I spoke to him the day before the game and I've still to get hold of him following it!"
Boothy has hit eight goals this term following the brace against Gillingham but is often more valuable for his all-round contribution rather than his out-and-out goal-scoring. Having said this, has Andy set himself a target for the season?
"I never set myself a target. I get asked that question all the time, but my aim is to play as many times as possible during the season and to keep performing at a high level. If I manage to do this, then hopefully the goals will come. I see it as a team game.
"I've started the last 16 games and so I'm happy. To be honest, I thought I may need a break over the busy festive period as it took its toll on me last season but I feel good. I can't remember the last time I started so many games in a row!
Town travel to Ashton Gate this weekend for what will be a tough trip to face Bristol City. City have lost their last two games - one of which was a home defeat to Cheltenham. This home defeat was only their second of the season.
"You could say it's a good time to face Bristol, with them being slightly out of form and maybe a little lower on confidence than they were a couple of weeks ago. However, it could work the other way as they will want to rejuvenate their promotion campaign.
"It's always a difficult game when you travel to Bristol, but we are high on confidence at the moment and there is no reason why we cannot go down there and get something. There are still 15 games to play and there are a lot of points to play for, so I can still see us making the Play-Offs. Other teams will be looking at our recent form and will fancy us to make a late charge into the promotion frame and it is still very much in our hands."
