Fletch has excelled in his new central midfield role recently |
Gary Taylor-Fletcher has been employed in many roles since his move from Lincoln to the Galpharm in the summer of 2005, but his recent move to the centre of midfield has received many plaudits from both management and fans alike.
The 25-year old started the season on fire, with eight goals in his first thirteen appearances of the season from the right wing. However, he is quick to state how much he is enjoying his new, slightly more defensive role.
"As long as I am playing then I am happy. With Worthy getting injured I have moved into the middle and there's a new side to the game for me now - putting in a lot more tackles is one major difference. To be honest, I actually prefer being in the middle to out on the wing. I'm a lot more involved as a general rule and you sometimes get isolated out on the flanks - being in the middle allows me to dictate the play.
"I've played in the middle before, during my time at Lincoln. I'm being asked to sit a little deeper than I was there but I'm enjoying the role. In an ideal world, I'd like to be playing up front but given the recent form of Boothy and Luke (Beckett) I can have no complaints."
Town boss Peter Jackson jokingly compared GTF to Paul Scholes in his post-match interview following the Chesterfield game - how did Fletch feel about this flattering comparison?!
"It made me laugh when I heard that - next the Gaffer will be saying Boothy is the new Rooney! I'll continue to do the best that I can for the team and then if more people want to make comparisons like that then they can!"
The form of the front two that Fletch referred to has seen both Booth and Beckett move to eight goals for the season. Gary is still top-scorer with his ten goals, but is he still keeping one eye on the scoring chart?
"If I'm getting pushed further back then they will always catch up to me. It doesn't really matter who gets the goals so long as they keep going in and we keep heading in the right direction."
Fletch missed four matches in October due to a knee injury, returning for the Scunthorpe United game in November. Since then he has been an ever-present in the side.
"I'm feeling good. Occasionally after a game, the knee that I injured does go a little bit stiff but I don't feel it at all during play."
Town have a tough trip to Bristol City this weekend, who have only lost twice at home in the League this season.
"We'll travel down to Ashton Gate and look to be solid during the opening period of the game. Bristol are strong at home but we are all confident that we can come away with a result. There are still 15 games left this season and we are only six points off the Play-Offs and so we will keep pushing ourselves to get back up there."
