TOWN DUO IN UNDER-21 ACTION

Posted on: Wed 08 Sep 2010

Town duo Scott Arfield and Graham Carey were in action for their respective countries at under-21 level in the European under-21 Championship qualifiers last night.

Midfielder Arfield (pictured) earned his 16th under-21 cap for Scotland as they qualified for the qualifying Play-Offs courtesy of a 2-1 home win over Austria. Scott - a summer signing from Scottish side Falkirk - played all 90 minutes in central midfield and did well.

Meanwhile, on-loan Celtic winger Graham Carey started for the Republic of Ireland under-21 side and impressed, but could not prevent his side from losing 1-0 in Turkey. Carey, who now has six caps, created one of Ireland's better chances in the first half - drilling a free-kick across the face of goal - before narrowly missing the target at the back post following a cross from Everton's Seamus Coleman.

Town custodian Alex Smithies got his first taste of an England under-21 matchday as the Three Lions qualified for the Play-Offs with a 3-0 win over Lithuania at Colchester United's Weston Homes Community Stadium. Smithies joined up with Stuart Pearce's squad following Town's weekend clash with AFC Bournemouth and was an unused substitute last night.
