Scunthorpe: Garry Thompson (53), Michael Raynes (61)
Town enjoyed the better of the first half against Championship side Scunthorpe United in this pre-season friendly at Glanford Park, but the Iron upped their game in the second-half and scored two goals without reply.
The Terriers moved the ball around nicely at times but could not find the breakthrough and after an error gifted Garry Thompson the opener, Michael Raynes scored a second from a corner to seal the tie.
Manager Lee Clark changed things up on the afternoon, deploying his side in a new-look 4-3-3 formation. 'Keeper Smithies was protected by a back four of left-back Naysmith, centre-backs Peter Clarke and McCombe and summer signing Scott Arfield at right-back instead of his more customary central midfield berth. Kay sat just in front of Town's back four with Joey Gudjonsson and Anthony Pilkington in more advanced central midfield roles, leaving wingers Carey and Roberts to support central striker Joe Garner.
An early ball down the line from Arfield allowed Garner to get down the side of the home defence but giant defender Jones did well to get back and make an interception.
Pilkington then played a great ball inside right-back Raynes to set the pacy Carey into space, but his near post cross was cleared by former Town defender Dave Mirfin, who had taken up a good position at the front post.
The Iron then crafted their first attack of note in the 5th minute, when Togwell took a quick free kick and a back post cross landed at the feet of winger Jonathan Forte; however, the experienced Naysmith pulled off a great diving block as the midfielder pulled the trigger.
The Terriers bossed possession in the opening ten minutes, pushing Nigel Adkins's side back into their own half with some controlled passing play. Midfielder Kay's 10th minute pass was cleverly flicked into the path of the onrushing Pilkington by Garner, but with defender Jones in close attendance he could only scuff a deflected shot straight at goalkeeper Murphy from fifteen yards.
SUB - That block was the last action that defender Jones made in the game; he winced immediately after that passage of play and was immediately hauled off, with right-back Raynes moving into the middle and substitute Andrew Wright playing at full-back.
An excellent tackle by Gudjonsson on opposition midfielder O'Connor saw the ball drop to the feet of Pilkington in the 12th minute and Murphy needed to be sharp to push away his 25-yard piledriver with two hands.
Town skipper Peter Clarke made a very brave diving block to stop O'Connor's powerful drive from testing Alex Smithies in the 22nd minute after a clever flick from Forte had released winger Thompson into space down the left.
Scunthorpe had switched to a midfield diamond by this point and the change in formation had brought them back into the game.
Gudjonsson hit a shot wide of goal from long range on the stroke of the half hour and the Icelandic international was his usual all-action self during the first-half, tackling with real gusto and spreading the ball around in precise fashion.
A dangerous Carey free-kick, delivered into the penalty area in the 38th minute, was excellently cleared behind by Mirfin with Clarke trying to get on the end of it but the danger wasn't over for the home side; Carey's corner was cleared to the edge of the box, where Gudjonsson returned it to the Irishman. He cut inside a defender and let fly with a powerful left-footed drive that Murphy had to turn away, with McCombe inches away from slotting home the rebound.
Town were back on the attack a minute later when Pilkington's persistence saw a loose ball run to Carey on the edge of the box, but he uncharacteristically pulled his left-footed shot well wide of goal.
The two Wrights of Scunthorpe combined well in the 41st minute when O'Connor played the ball out to right-back Andrew Wright, who's near post cross found midfielder Josh Wright in space; however, he placed his header straight at Smithies from fifteen yards out.
Good play from Roberts and Gudjonsson down the right channel created space for right-back Arfield to deliver a quality cross into the box on the stroke of half-time, but Garner's glancing header drifted wide of the far post.
The last action of the half saw Scunthorpe left-back McNulty hit a long ranger high and wide of Town's goal.

There were no changes to the team during the interval and Scott Arfield had to be alert to stop an early enterprising run from midfielder by Togwell - the Scotsman continuing to impress in his new position.
Forte's poor effort at winning a penalty off Peter Clarke in the 50th minute had no success, but the home side soon took the lead.
GOAL - Scunthorpe's Garry Thompson netted the Iron's first real chance of the game in the 53rd minute to put the Championship side ahead. Anthony Pilkington - who had played excellently on the afternoon - gave the ball away just inside his own half, almost gifting striker Chris Dagnall a free run at goal; Peter Clarke tried to get across and block his shot but instead he slipped the ball inside to his teammate, who finished past Smithies inside the area.
Town tried to fight back and Peter Clarke's header from Gudjonsson's deep free-kick flashed across the face of goal moments after the restart. However, Adkins's side were visibly buoyed by the opener and Smithies did excellently to turn Forte's snapshot wide at his near post in the 57th minute.
A mistake from Antony Kay released O'Connor into space down the right a minute later and his deep cross picked out the head of goalscorer Thompson, but at full stretch he placed his header over Smithies' bar.
GOAL - Scunthorpe made their pressure count in the 61st minute and extended their lead through Michael Raynes. Jamie McCombe cleared the ball behind for a right-sided corner and from Josh Wright's delivery, Mirfin forced a near post save out of Smithies; however, the ball dropped straight to the defender who tapped the ball home from close range.
Dagnall drove a snapshot well wide from range as the home side continued to press.
SUB - Lee Clark introduced Theo Robinson to the game in the 65th minute - he replaced Gary Roberts. This change brought about a change of formation to 4-4-2, with Town employing a diamond in midfield.
Robinson was immediately into the action, with his ball across the face of the penalty area giving Naysmith space to cross; however, his deep delivery fell just behind the substitute as he tried to head home.
The ball dropped in behind the Town defence from the resulting goal kick and McCombe made a vital block to push Thompson's shot from inside the area around the post. Forte got his head to the resulting corner, but Arfield headed off the line.
SUB - Scunthorpe made changes in the 72nd minute, with O'Connor and Dagnall replaced by Martyn Woolford and former Town man Michael Collins.
Antony Kay stung the palms of Murphy with a rasping drive from range in the 81st minute, but the goalkeeper comfortably turned the ball over the crossbar in the end.
McCombe got his head to the following corner, but Pilkington volleyed high over the crossbar when the ball dropped to him.
SUB - Scunthorpe made another substitution in the 82nd minute, with Jonathan Forte replaced by Bobby Grant.
