Town: Joey Gudjonsson (17)
A superb goal from Icelandic international Joey Gudjonsson sealed an impressive victory for Lee Clark's side over Premier League opponents Blackburn Rovers on home soil this evening.
The 30-year old midfielder controlled his volley beautifully midway through the first-half to notch the first goal in the 2010/11 home shirt as Clark's side impressed in their only outing on home soil ahead of the npower League One season.
An early right wing cross from Anthony Pilkington flashed across the face of the Blackburn goal as Town made a positive start in their striking new blue and white striped home shirt for the 2010/11 season.
Former Rovers trainee Pilks looked sharp early on and drove a shot wide from a narrow angle inside the fourth minute after good work from Gary Roberts and Theo Robinson.
New boy Joey Gudjonsson was the next to try his luck on the stroke of the 5th minute after Jordan Rhodes was fouled 25 yards from goal by Rovers midfielder Amine Linganzi, but his powerful drive was always going wide of 'keeper Mark Bunn's right-hand post.
Linganzi's looping header from full back Morris' cross was easily claimed by Alex Smithies during Blackburn's first foray into the Town area three minutes later before a slack pass from Jamie McCombe presented his midfield colleague Andranik Teymourian with a shooting opportunity in the 10th minute - and the Iranian was only inches wide of the right-hand post with his effort.
Gary Roberts got his first chance to run at the right back in the 13th minute after receiving a Scott Arfield pass and his cross fell to fellow winger Pilkington, who headed over the crossbar at full stretch.
Rovers striker Rigters sent a snapshot high into the spectators from Kirklees College housed in the Fantastic Family Stand soon afterwards as the game continued to flow from end to end.
GOAL - Town took the lead in the 17th minute courtesy of a spectacular strike from new boy Joey Gudjonsson. Town's build-up play was flowing - first the impressive Gary Naysmith skipped past Teymourian on the left before passing infield to Arfield, who spread the ball out wide to Pilkington; he passed to the overlapping Peltier, whose cross was brilliant but cleared to the edge of the box by Blackburn.
Up stepped the Icelandic international - in space 25 yards from goal, he controlled his volley beautifully and sent the ball spearing into the top right corner of Mark Bunn's goal.
The pace of the game didn't quell after the opener - first Pilkington released Robinson into the right channel but strike partner Rhodes couldn't connect properly with his deep cross and then skipper Peter Clarke showed great bravery at the other end to block two efforts from former Senegal international El Hadji Diouf.
Anthony Pilkington's 29th minute long shot was powerfully struck but sailed high and wide of the mark but Town were still pressing hard for a second, with the crossing of right-back Lee Peltier was causing havoc in the Rovers penalty area.
However, the Premier League side still showed real quality at times and midfield powerhouse Linganzi will have been disappointed to see his 33rd minute shot from 20 yards fly over the bar after he was cleverly played into space by Diouf.
Arfield looked lively and in the 38th minute his clever pass into the outside of the area allowed Pilkington to turn and deliver a wicked cross into the box. The ball was cleared by Khizanishvili to the edge of the area where Scotsman Arfield scuffed a left-footed shot wide of the near post.
Gudjonsson was pulling the strings for Town in central midfield and it was his perfectly delivered cross-field pass that released Roberts into space down the left with two minutes of the half remaining. He cut inside right-back Ramm before darting back on the outside, but his cross come shot went high over the bar.
Clarke was on hand right at the end of the half to block another decent looking shot from Diouf, preserving Town's first-half lead.
HALF TIME: HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 1 BLACKBURN ROVERS 0
SUB - Blackburn made one change at half-time, with substitute 'keeper Jason Brown replacing Bunn.
Town were immediately back on the attack following the restart, with Naysmith releasing Roberts with a forward pass; he delicately dinked the ball into Theo Robinson who cleverly chested back to Rhodes, but he skied his left foot volley from the edge of the area.
Robinson's electric pace caused Blackburn problems in the 52nd minute when he capitalised on Khizanishvili's poor header to latch onto Arfield's clearance inside the Blackburn half. The striker advanced on the goalkeeper and neatly rounded him, but he sent a curling shot over the bar from an acute angle.
SUB - Blackburn made their second substitution in the 58th minute, with Maceo Rigters replaced by Rodrigo Branco.
An enterprising 45 yard break up field from Arfield immediately followed that change, which finished with him sliding a pass right to Pilkington; he cut inside onto his left foot, but his powerful 20-yard drive was well blocked by a defender.
SUB - Town made their first change in the 61st minute, with new loan signing Joe Garner replacing Jordan Rhodes.
Gary Roberts then tried his luck from range a minute later, but his 30-yard shot drifted wide of the far post. Minutes later Arfield had similar luck after receiving an infield pass from midfielder partner Gudjonsson.
SUBS: Blackburn made a double change in the 69th minute, bringing on Michael Potts and Zak Aley for Nick Blackman and Amine Linganzi.
SUB - Graham Carey was brought on by Lee Clark in the 73rd minute, replacing Gary Roberts on the left wing.
SUB - Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce replaced defender Zurab Khizanishvili with Matthew Pearson in the 75th minute.
Diouf missed what was probably Blackburn's best chance on the evening with just under quarter of an hour remaining, volleying left-back Morris' cross wide at the far post.
Rovers had their most sustained period of pressure at this stage, but the best they could offer was a long range piledriver from youngster Zak Aley in the 81st minute.
SUB - Lee Croft made his Huddersfield home debut in the next minute, replacing Anthony Pilkington on the right of midfield.
Town comfortably saw the game out in the closing stages to record an impressive win over their opponents.
