LOAN WATCH - JOE MAKES SHREWS DEBUT

Posted on: Mon 25 Jan 2010

Joe Skarz made an impressive debut for loan club Shrewsbury Town during their 2-1 victory over Dagenham & Redbridge in League Two on Saturday.

The left-back played all 90 minutes at the New Meadow and nearly opened his account for his new Club with a stunning 35-yard volley that drifted just wide of the Daggers' goal.

He also made a great defensive block to deny Dagenham danger-man Paul Benson a certain goal during the first 45 minutes.

Joe will be hoping to continue his good start when his new Club take on Accrington Stanley at home on Saturday.

Jim Goodwin made his third appearance for Oldham Athletic, but could not prevent a 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Millwall. The Irish midfielder played the full game in the less familiar right-back position for the Latics and will be hoping to get more game-time when they take on Brentford at Boundary Park next weekend.

Striker Phil Jevons made a welcome return to the Morecambe team as they recorded a 2-1 victory over Barnet in League Two on Saturday afternoon, playing 81 minutes before being replaced late on. However, his fellow Morecambe and Town teammate Ian Craney could miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on damaged ankle ligaments. Morecambe's next game comes on Tuesday evening at Macclesfield Town.

First year professional Jack Hunt had an unhappy debut for Blue Square National side Grays Athletic; although he managed 90 minutes at right-back, his side lost 4-0 to promotion chasing Oxford United. Jack will be hoping for better luck when Grays play at Chester City next weekend.

Meanwhile, Academy striker James Spencer impressed again as Northwich Victoria recorded their third straight League win in a 3-2 thriller at Farsley Celtic. The 18-year old could have netted a hat-trick on another afternoon and was unlucky to see the Trickies' second goal go down as an own goal - it was his shot that cannoned back off the post before the ball hit the goalkeeper on the back and crossed the line.

It was Jimmy's pressure on the 'keeper that led to Northwich's third - the custodian's hurried headed clearance fell straight to striker Brian Dutton, who headed into the vacant net.

Northwich's next game comes on Tuesday evening when they host minnows Runcorn Linnets of the North West Counties League in the Chester FA Senior Cup and James will be hoping to feature.

Spencer Harris and Curzon Ashton's frustrating run of postponements came to an end at the weekend when they faced Skelmersdale United in the Unibond League Division One North, with the game ending 1-1. 'Spenner' could be back in action tonight, with Curzon hosting Droylsden in the Manchester Senior Cup.

Andy Butler was an unused substitute for Blackpool during their 3-2 win over Watford on Saturday, whereas Leigh Franks didn't get onto the pitch against Blyth Spartans in the Blue Square North. However, 'Franko' did impress for Fleetwood's under-19 side during a friendly against Scottish giants Celtic on Friday afternoon in an impressive 2-1 victory.

"Leigh was absolutely terrific," Fleetwood manager Micky Mellon enthused to the Club's official website. "He was everything I expected and more. He was organised and did everything we wanted him to do. I'm certainly delighted to have him on board."
