TOM: "WE'RE LOOKING FOR THE WIN"

Posted on: Fri 21 Aug 2009

Midfielder Tom Clarke has told htafc.com that the team will be looking for all three points from this weekend's League One game against Bristol Rovers.

The team set off on their 200 mile voyage to Bristol this morning and although the side have a mouthwatering Cup clash against Newcastle United on the horizon, the 21-year old stressed that the whole squad were fully focussed on beating the Pirates:

"The lads are excited about Wednesday, but we have a game on Saturday and we are looking for the win," Tom explained. "It will be a tough game, but we want to capitalise on our good work to date. Only then can we start thinking about Newcastle."

Tom has impressed everyone with his performances in central midfield since replacing the suspended Michael Collins in the side and explained that he knew he would eventually get his chance under manager Lee Clark .

"We brought a lot of good players in over the summer, but I've just tried to train hard and I actually thought I did well in the pre-season games.

"The Gaffer has always said that he'd never hesitate to put me in and Michael Collins' suspension gave me my chance. Hopefully I will now keep my shirt.

"Everyone wants to play and it is tough being sat on the bench or not being involved, especially if the team is winning. Now I'm in the side I really feel a part of it and I just want to keep playing - and winning!

"Training is really hard, but it's really good. There is a competitive edge to it due to the players the Gaffer has brought in, but I've kept my head down and now I'm in I just want to carry on playing well."

He also cited his work with Performance Coach Steve Black throughout the current season as a reason behind his impressive form.

"I have always prepared well in my own time, but Blackie has come in and got us working on our own individual weight programs. Everything is geared towards us being in ideal shape ahead of the games, which is ideal because I think it's going to be a tough and exciting season."

Clarke started his career as a central defender at the Club and has carried his defensive ability into his new position, earning the nickname 'The Tominator' from First Team Coach Derek Fazackerley!

"Perhaps I should have had a shot on Tuesday because they were all flying in, but to be honest, I get more satisfaction out of a good tackle or keeping a clean sheet. I'm happy to let the other lads get the glory at the other end, as long as we win."
