It was another good workout at the Galpharm Stadium this afternoon for Lee Clark's men who drew with Championship side Coventry City. Despite the scoreline it was an entertaining game with both sides having chances in the halves they dominated - City the first and Town the second.
Town kicked off in a 4-5-1 formation with former Coventry man Robbie Simpson as the lone striker. Pilkington lined up on the right of midfield with Roberts on the opposite side with Kay, Collins and Berrett taking up a central midfield berth.
The defence, from left to right, read Williams, Peter Clarke, Nathan Clarke and Tom Clarke. Smithies kept goal.
The first effort by either side came after 11 minutes when Leon Best rose in the area to meet Elliott Ward's cross from the left, but the big striker headed just wide of Alex Smithies right-hand post.
Robbie Simpson went even closer three minutes later with a free-kick from 20 yards after he was fouled by Gunnarsson 20 yards from goal. The striker stepped up for the set-piece but curled his right-footed effort just wide of keeper Westwood's right-hand post.
Town were given a warning on 18 minutes when the visitors had the ball in the back of the net after Ward rifled the ball high into the roof of the goal from 5 yards, but the effort did not count as the referee's assistant had already flagged striker Morrison offside for his part in the build up.
Michael Doyle could have put the visitors ahead on the half hour mark but Best's excellent cross from the right just evaded the City player before Alex Smithies quickly smothered the ball.
Simpson should have then put Town in front when he was presented with the best chance of the game after he was played through on goal on 42 minutes by a brilliantly weighted ball over the defence by Antony Kay. Town's new striker sprinted onto the ball but, one on one with the keeper, hesitated too long and Westwood was able to get to the ball and usher it away from Simpson.

SUB: Town made their first change at half time replacing James Berrett with Theo Robinson.
Simpson had the first real chance in the second half when he latched onto Roberts' cross from the left but he could not rise high enough to get the necessary accuracy on the header and it rose over the bar.
Theo made an instant impact and after embarrassing left back McPake with his speed the defender hauled him down cynically on the flank.
SUB: Clark made his second change of the game on 62 minutes when he replaced Williams with Skarz.
SUB: Coleman made a double substitution at the same time with Steve Wright replaced by Grandison and Best by Jeffers.
Simpson again was in the right place at the right time to collect a Roberts cross from the left and the striker did well to outmuscle Ward at the far post but his downward header bounced the wrong side of the post.
SUB: Clark made a double substitution on 70 minutes replacing Gary Roberts with Lionel Ainsworth and Michael Collins with Jim Goodwin.
SUB: Coventry made another sub at the same time bringing on Adam Walker for Michael Doyle.
Goodwin made an immediate impact and floated an inviting ball into the area which Robinson was inches away from converting at the back post after a Kay's flick-on.
SUB: Turner replaced Ward on 75 minutes for Coventry.
SUB: Lee Novak was then introduced by Lee Clark and he replaced Robbie Simpson who was cheered by both sets of supporters.
Town gathered momentum as the game entered the final ten minutes and Robinson missed a good chance to put the Terriers in front when he was played in behind the Coventry defence by a great ball over the top by Pilkington but the striker's fake to the right to round the keeper's left was well read by Westwood who got down well to block the effort.
Coventry then made keeper Smithies work but he was always equal to Cain's effort from outside the area after he cut on from the left flank.
