ROBBO: "I BELIEVE IN MY HEART WE CAN GAIN PROMOTION"
Reigning Player of the Year Gary Roberts expects his next three years at Huddersfield Town to be the most exciting of his career.
The 25-year old has committed his future to the Club until the summer of 2012 today and told htafc.com that the ambition of the Club played a large part in his decision.
"I know where this Club is going and so today - actually signing my contract - is a big day for me," Robbo explained. "The Gaffer is here for three years and has a three year plan, which it is great to be a part of. We all have an exciting three years ahead!
"I get on with the manager really well and that has played a massive part in my decision to stay. He has been great with me since he first arrived in December; he believes in me and gives me the freedom to express myself out on the pitch, which is all you can ask for as a footballer. With a bit of confidence, I know I am a better player and the whole coaching staff have shown that they believe in me.
"Believe me when I say that the Chairman here is ultra-ambitious and I cannot see any reason why this Club cannot be in the top flight in the not-too-distant future. I genuinely mean that; I'm not just saying that to get the fans going, I believe it in my heart.
"The Chairman is so keen for success and the players who have joined during the summer can all play at a higher level. However, we all have to take it one step at a time and the first step is to get out of this division by the end of the season."
Along with the ambition of the Chairman and manager, Gary also cited his relationship with Town fans as a factor behind his decision to extend his old deal, which was due to expire in the summer of 2010.
"You hear players saying how much the fans mean to them all the time, but they do genuinely make a difference to my game. When I hear them chanting my name or cheering me on it means a lot to me and the way that the season tickets have sold again it will be the same next term. I will do my best to entertain the fans again next season!"
Scarily for defences in League One, 'Robbo' insists there is still more to come from him in the 2009/10 season:
"There is definitely more to come from me. Blackie always tells us that you are doing well or doing badly - you are never stood still as a footballer. As such, I am working really hard with the coaches to get better.
"I thought I faded a little bit towards the end of last season and although I had a great pre-season last term, the fitness work we are doing now will stand me in good stead. I was fairly happy with eleven goals and fourteen assists last year but I want to improve on that and if we can get as many goals from midfield again next season we should be near the top end of the League.
"The training has been hard but really enjoyable. Steve Black and Andy Kiwomya are doing a great job with the lads - we all look fit and sharp. I can't wait for the first game!"
