TOWN'S ATTENDANCES BUCK THE TREND

Posted on: Tue 12 May 2009

Crowds at Huddersfield Town's home games increased over the 2008/09 season, contradicting falling attendances in Coca Cola League One.

Just over 307,000 fans walked through the turnstiles at Town's home Stadium throughout the campaign, compared to 216,000 in the previous season - an increase of 42%. This equates to an increase in the average crowd per game from 9,391 in 2007/08 to 13,350 in 2008/09.

Comparatively, attendances across League One dropped by 5.4% percent in the 08/09 campaign, with a total of 4,172,343 people attending matches compared to 4,411,413 fans in the previous season. The League average attendance ended as 7,559 - compared to 7,992 in 07/08.

If you remove Town's increased attendances from the League One total, attendances across the division dropped by 7.9% - meaning that Town's increased support brought the divisional average up by an impressive 2.5%.

Town's figures are particularly pleasing given that the Club's attendances dropped from 243,000 in the 06/07 season to 216,000 in 07/08 - an 11% fall.

The Club brought in various ticket initiatives to make matches more accessible for the fans in the 2008/09 season; as well as the pioneering £100 season ticket offer for the Club's Centenary, discounted tickets have been available via the 'Fans of the Future' campaign and in family areas.

Huddersfield Town Chief Executive Nigel Clibbens told htafc.com that he was delighted with the support from the Club's fans.

"It's great to see that our support levels were so good given the tough financial climate we have experienced recently," Nigel told the Club's official website.

"I think the early season ticket figures show that the fans are really excited about the ambition of the Club. Although the discounted season ticket prices definitely helped, the reduced prices also provided fans with less incentive to come back if they didn't like the matchday experience and I am delighted that our average attendance increased by almost 4,000.

"The challenge for us all in 2009/10 is now to beat last season's average."

Town fans are backing up their tremendous levels of support throughout the 2008/09 campaign by purchasing their 2009/10 season tickets. As of this morning, over 8,500 have been sold at the early bird prices.
