SMITHIES PICKS UP ENGLAND U-19 CAP

Posted on: Wed 11 Feb 2009

Alex Smithies started in goal for England's under-19s the first time last night, but was unable to prevent a 3-0 defeat against Spain.

The friendly, played at AFC Bournemouth's Fitness First Stadium got off to a bad start for Smithies when after just five minutes when a mix-up at the back allowed the visitors to take the lead but despite the scoreline, Smithies performed well and pulled off several impressive saves.

Meanwhile, James Berrett was an unused substitute during Republic of Ireland under-21's international friendly against Germany. Berrett, who has already been capped at this level, could only watch from the sidelines as the match ended in a respectable 1-1 stalemate.
