Town's reserve side played in their second behind-closed-doors friendly in successive weeks at Championship side Doncaster Rovers today and manager Lee Clark has told htafc.com that the performance of his squad is giving him 'welcome problems' when it comes to selecting the matchday sixteen at the weekend.
Following on from last week's game at Premier League side Blackburn Rovers, First Team Coach Derek Fazackerley led an experienced side in an equally impressive performance at Rovers' training ground today and Clark admitted he was delighted with the run-out:
"Today was another great game for the lads, played on a good pitch at a good tempo; it was very beneficial again," Lee told htafc.com. "We had a strong team out featuring Matt Glennon, Dominik Werling, Chris Lucketti, David Unsworth, Tom Clarke, Joe Skarz, Michael Flynn, Jon Worthington, Ian Craney and James Berrett.
"Matches are what matter - they are the most important thing. You will come up against different types of teams and players in games and it is interesting to see how the players handle that change.
"It's giving me welcome problems at the moment. The players who are out of the team are pushing and giving us that little nudge to remind us they are about; they are all doing fantastically and are working as hard as they possibly can. It's all you can ask for as a manager.
"We will work on getting more games like this, as they are the type and the quality that I want."
The run-out will have been particularly beneficial for new boy Werling, who is keen to build up his match fitness after signing for Town yesterday.
"Dominik is getting fitter, but he needs games and today was important for him," explained Lee. "He has done well here so far and he is gradually getting fitter day by day."
However, legendary hitman Andy Booth did not feature as his gradual comeback from a long-term back problem continues.
"Andy just needs a little bit more time to recover from the serious operation he had recently."
