'JEVO' ON THE HUNT FOR GOALS
Phil Jevons has told htafc.com that he wants to score the goals that will propel Town into the League One Play-Off places.
The 29-year old Liverpudlian has forced his way back into the starting eleven under new manager Lee Clark after a number of impressive performances from the bench and told the Club's official website that he isn't going to give up his first-team berth without a fight.
"It's been brilliant so far - he (Lee Clark) hasn't half picked the place up," 'Jevo' explained. "We were down on our knees a little bit before Gerry came in and got us playing football again and it has gone up another notch since the Gaffer and his staff came in. He has brought the best out of everyone.
"The Gaffer has been loyal - he has kept the same team and he hasn't changed too much since arriving at the Club, so it has been a pretty smooth transition. The fact that I have got back into the team is great news for me and now I just have to keep working hard to stay in there. He is giving people the chance when they deserve it and that is good news for everyone here, especially the people who aren't in the team at the moment.
"It has been a stop-start season for me so far. When I first arrived at the Club this time last year I was fit, playing regularly, scoring goals and doing well but then I picked up the injury and I struggled to come back from that. I scored in the final game of last season and I felt like I would come back and start the new campaign on a fresh note as the Club's main goalscorer, but it hasn't worked out until the new manager arrived.
"My aim now is to stay in the team and it's up to me to keep playing to the best of my ability. The next step for me is to score goals. The transfer window is here and it's likely that the Gaffer is looking to bring players in, which will only add to the competition for places here but if I start scoring on a regular basis I am sure I will stay in the team."
Jevons featured in Town's most recent fixtures against Scunthorpe United and Oldham Athletic, but it was only the second time that the former Bristol City man has started consecutive games in the current campaign. However, he insisted that he never gave up on his career at the Galpharm Stadium.
"Stan (Ternent) had different ideas on how he wanted the team to play and I didn't fit into that, so I just kept my head down and kept working hard. I wanted to stick with it, because I know I am at a great Club. It's a great place to be a part of at the moment - we are all buzzing and people are talking about us. Hopefully I will start scoring goals and I can help to push us up the table towards those Play-Off places."
Phil's next opportunity to open his goalscoring account for the season comes on Saturday when Town travel to Northampton for a 3pm kick-off at their Sixfields Stadium.
"We have recorded wins at some very difficult places this season, such as Leeds and Southend, and to be honest the thing that has let us down during my time at the Club has been our home form. We are starting to turn the corner with that now, so hopefully we can keep our away form going. Every game in League One is tough because everyone is fighting for something but we don't fear going anywhere. Northampton have a great pitch and we are looking forward to going there this weekend."
