SKARZ: "THE WIN WAS FOR THE FANS"
19-year old defender Joe Skarz had dedicated the Club's win at Leeds United to the fans after their tremendous vocal support at Elland Road on Saturday.
The former League One Apprentice of the Year scored his first professional goal within just 43 seconds of the restart of the second-half to bring the scores level before Michael Collins' late winner.
"It was a dream scenario for me," Joe said of his goal. "I was checking the Club's website and there was an article ahead of the Leeds game saying that I hadn't scored so I was thinking about it quite a bit - it seemed about time! Obviously, there is no better place to open my account than at Elland Road."
Skarz popped up inside the Leeds penalty area to net the 46th minute volley and explained that it was a deliberate ploy for the wing-backs to push further up the pitch following the half-time break.
"When we were crossing the ball in the first-half, there was only one person in the box on a few occasions and so I thought I would try and get forward a little bit more in the second half. I wanted to give the Leeds full-back a little bit more defensive work to do and when I scored, Andy (Holdsworth) was in the box too. I think it worked in the second half as we were a lot more attacking, which led to a good result."
Joe still had to thank teammate Ian Craney following the game; the Town midfielder ducked on the line to allow Skarz's volley into the net.
"I thanked Ian after the game!" he laughed. "I was praying that he would duck out of the way when I hit it because I thought the linesman would give it as offside if he touched it - that's why I paused for a split-second before celebrating!"
The former pupil of Newsome College went onto praise the 2,000 Town fans that made the short journey over the Elland Road.
"We had brilliant support at Leeds. It was a great feeling to come out of the tunnel to a full house and even though their fans outnumbered ours, you could hear ours all the way through the game. When I scored, my first thought was to celebrate with them; to show some appreciation for their support. The result was for them."
