Town's Caretaker Manager Gerry Murphy has today confirmed that Andy Holdsworth will captain the side against Port Vale on Saturday.

The 24-year-old defender, who started only three of the last ten matches under Stan Ternent, has been handed the captain's armband for Saturday's FA Cup First Round tie with Port Vale at the Galpharm Stadium (3pm kick-off).

Caretaker manager Gerry Murphy has confirmed he'll have club captain Chris Lucketti as one of seven substitutes, so Holdsworth will lead out the team.

"Andy is a thinking man's footballer who reads the game very well," said Murphy, starting his third stint as caretaker boss.

"He's got a great attitude and a lot of other qualities as well and that's why I've chosen him to take the armband tomorrow."

Murphy is hoping to replicate the defensive form of his last spell at the helm, when Town finished last season with five successive clean sheets, but the target is simply to get into Sunday's second-round draw with a victory (ITV, 1.45pm).

"The lads have shown great application on the training ground in the last couple of days and I want them to take that out onto the field tomorrow, play with no shackles and give the fans something to cheer," added Murphy, who confirmed Matt Glennon will start in goal and Alex Smithies will be back on the bench as goalkeeping cover.
