BURY 1 HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 1

Posted on: Sat 19 Jul 2008

Town kicked off their 2008/09 pre-season campaign with a draw at Gigg Lane this afternoon. New boss Stan Ternent set his side out in an adventurous 3-4-3 formation, with 'keeper Matt Glennon protected by centre-backs Andy Butler, Nathan Clarke and skipper Chris Lucketti. The midfield consisted of, from right to left, Andy Holdsworth, James Berrett, Michael Collins and Robbie Williams with Danny Cadamarteri and Keigan Parker playing either side of the central Luke Beckett up front.

Bury, who had played two friendlies prior to this, started brightly and crafted the first chance after six minutes.A left-wing cross from midfielder Richie Baker was met by the head of highly-rated striker Andy Bishop, but his header lacked power or direction and drifted wide of Glennon's left-hand post.

However, Town settled into the game and Nathan Clarke picked out left-sided forward Cadamarteri with a great 60-yard raking pass in the 10th minute; he outmuscled former Town man Danny Racchi before pulling the ball across the face of goal, only for it to be cleared by a defender.

Andy Holdsworth fired Town's first shot over the bar in the 17th minute after he superbly controlled a Cadamarteri pass during a quick break.

Bishop was looking lively for Bury up front and he collected a deft pass from Jones inside the area a minute later before turning to shoot at the near post. Thankfully for Town, Nathan Clarke had read the danger brilliantly to get across and block the shot and the rebound went straight into Glennon's arms.

Robbie Williams fired a shot well over the bar from 20 yards after 24 minutes after being played into space by the lively Michael Collins.

Town's aerial prowess was causing Bury problems at set-pieces, with former Terrier Efe Sodje required to make an acrobatic overhead kick from the home goalmouth midway through the first-half.

Once more Bishop caught the eye with a shot on the half-hour mark; his left-footed effort from the edge of the Town box flying wide of Matt Glennon's right-hand post. The battle between Bishop and Butler was a feature of the first-half, with the new Town signing one of the most impressive figures on the pitch.

Half-Time: Bury 0 Huddersfield Town 0

Ternent made a number of changes during the interval, but kept faith in his formation. Triallist Paul Gerrard replaced Glennon in goal, whereas Cadamarteri took up Beckett's vacant central position up front and showed great strength and balance to brush off a bigger defender within the first minute - eventually driving a low shot straight at the Bury 'keeper.

Midfielder Richie Baker then came the closest to breaking the deadlock for Bury in the 54th minute when he picked up a bad pass out of the Town defence, advanced and drilled a shot just wide of the left-hand post.

A minute later Bury broke swiftly and Gerrard did excellently to smother the ball at the feet of Bishop on the edge of the six-yard box.

It was all Bury at the time and a lucky deflection off Andy Holdsworth presented Bishop with a headed chance inside the box in the 56th minute, with Gerrard saving well when at full stretch to his right side.

Town fought back, and Andy Holdsworth's low ball across the face of goal had to be hastily cleared behind by Paul Scott a minute later.

Substitute Kamara struck a shot at the back post after collecting a low cross from Skarz in the 60th minute, forcing an excellent reaction save from 'keeper Wayne Brown.

A poor back-pass from Holdsworth set one-time Town triallist Phil Marsh in on goal a minute later, but once again Paul Gerrard came to Town's rescue and collected the ball after parrying the initial shot.

Town switched to an orthodox 4-4-2 after 65 minutes, but it was Bury who crafted the next shot when Racchi did well, dribbling the ball into the Town box before eventually firing well over.

Danny Cadamarteri's left-wing cross in the 67th minute found its way to the back post where Kamara volleyed wide of the near post from an acute angle.

GOAL - Bury took the lead in the 71st minute with what was perhaps the move of the game. Patient build-up through midfield saw the ball eventually moved to the right-wing, where the overlapping full-back hung a cross up to the near post. Paul Gerrard came for the ball but was under heavy pressure and spilled the ball, which gave Phil Marsh an eternity to smash the ball into the roof of the net from six yards out.

Town had most of the possession after the goal - with Danny Cadamarteri looking a real threat until being substituted - but struggled to get any shots on target until they equalised in the 81st minute.

GOAL - Town equalised with nine minutes left through first-year professional Danny Codman. The build-up play started on the left side, with Collins playing a ball to the right side for Tom Clarke. He advanced before feeding a pass to Phil Jevons on the edge of the box and the striker cleverly fed the ball around the defender and into the path of Codman inside the area, who calmly slid the ball past the advancing goalkeeper to level the scores.
