22-year old Town midfielder Michael Collins has scored twice for the Republic of Ireland Under-21 side as they defeated hosts Malaysia 3-1 in the Intercontinental Cup tournament opening fixture today.

The Halifax-born Academy graduate played alongside Town teammate James Berrett in central midfield as the Irish overpowered the Asian side.

Collins (pictured) opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, heading home a cross from Keith Treacy's right-wing cross, before doubling his tally with a low drive from the edge of the box just four minutes later. He went close to grabbing a hat-trick with six minutes of the first-half remaining, but another long-range effort fizzed just wide of the post.

These two goals were his first for his country in just his third cap at under-21 level.

19-year old Berrett, who was making his debut for the Irish at this level in this under-23 tournament, and Collins both managed 90 minutes despite the humid conditions.

Don Givens' side will now take on tournament favourites Nigeria in the next group match on Saturday, kick-off 11.30am; keep checking htafc.com for updates on their progress!
