57-year old Mick Docherty has joined Huddersfield Town as a coach.

The experienced former Burnley, Manchester City and Sunderland defender has worked with Stan Ternent and Ronnie Jepson at Burnley previously and Stan told htafc.com he was delighted to have him on board.

"I like to bring my own people in," Stan told the official club website. "A lot of lads come through the Academy, such as James Berrett, and it is important for them to continue their development in the reserve team and the first team. Mick, along with Ronnie and I, will ensure this happens."

In his first interview, Docherty added: "I had a few other irons in the fire, but the opportunity to join a club with so much history and so much potential is just too good to turn down.

"There are a lot of parallels with Burnley, who are now established in the Championship, and I firmly believe Stan can do the same thing here at Huddersfield. He and Ronnie are both very experienced and very driven guys, and it's exciting to be a part of their plans to take the club forward.

"The season-ticket offer means we will have an excellent support base next season and the challenge of meeting the fans' expectations is a great one.

"Both myself and Ronnie have had recent experience of League One and Stan has a great track record in buying and selling players to assemble promotion-winning squads. It's great to be back working with them and I firmly believe we can be successful."

Eldest son of the famous Tommy Docherty, he was forced to end his playing career through injury in 1979 before going on to join the Sunderland coaching staff. He took over the managerial reins at Roker Park for the last four games of the 1980/81, saving the Club from relegation courtesy of a 1-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield.

He was briefly manager of Hartlepool United between June and December 1983 before becoming assistant to former Town centre-back Dave Sutton at Rochdale, eventually succeeding him in 1994. He led Dale to the Northern final of the Auto Windscreens Trophy.

He then spent a long time at Burnley as coach alongside Stan and Ronnie, helping to establish them as a Championship side, before leaving to join Ronnie at Gillingham. When Jepson resigned in September of 2007, he took joint caretaker charge alongside Iffy Onuora before leaving a month later.
