MIDDLETON: CHAIRMAN ELECT IS FAN-TASTIC

Posted on: Wed 30 Apr 2008

Marcus Middleton is one supporter who could not help but be impressed by Town's new Chairman Elect Dean Hoyle. Having seen the Card Factory boss and new Town investor in action at a supporters meeting in April, he felt compelled to share his thoughts.

Middleton is founder member of supporters group FFA and is also on the steering committee to form a single supporters association and these are simply his thoughts as a long term Town fan.

"I spent probably the most inspiring 75 minutes of my Huddersfield Town supporting life listening to our new chairman-elect. For the first time in a long time I genuinely feel that my football club is going to fight its weight. The warm glow that came over me was Chris Billy at Wembley, Lee Fowler at Cardiff, and Dave Cowling at Leeds all rolled into one!

"He is a man of small stature. If he walked by you then you wouldn't bat an eye lid. In fact for years many people must have done just that as he stood on the terrace at Leeds Road or sat in his seat in the Kilner Bank stand. But rest assured that is about to change.

"He has the potential to be a colossus within Huddersfield Town. He is forthright. He is honest. He is successful. He doesn't have short arms and deep pockets. He is a Town fan. This man is going to get Huddersfield Town back on its uppers, and he's going to do it his way.

"He had witnessed the lifeblood draining away from the fans and he decided he had seen enough. He couldn't sit back and see it fester any longer. He approached Ken Davy about coming onboard, and over a couple of months privately a deal was agreed. We, the fans, will surely reap the benefits.

"Having listened to and questioned him I have no doubt that the next 12 months are going to be one hell of a ride for Huddersfield Town and all its followers. What started with a change of manager, then £100 season tickets will be followed by an influx of players similar in proportion to when Peter Jackson rebuilt our squad after administration.

"He has provided a 'significant' kitty which will enable Town to bid for other club's players, and an increased wage budget to entice better quality players to the club. He knows that the 1400 players out of contract this summer are other Club's cast offs. If they aren't good enough for their teams why would they be good enough for his team!

"He could have appealed to the wishes of the fans and tried to attract a 'big name' manager. He admits if he's appointed Alan Shearer that the ground would have been full of season ticket holders. But could Alan Shearer have spent Dean Hoyle's money wisely? He admits Stan Ternent may not have been an attractive announcement to everyone. But he feels it will be the right choice, it will be effective and if he believes in him then we, the fans, should trust him.

"He realises that £100 for a season ticket, to many people, is not a lot of money. So if the product/results aren't good enough then people won't mind staying at home on a matchday as they would only be 'wasting' less than £5. That's why he says it's doubly important the team/club produce the goods from day one.

"He is going to give it his all. If his manager, the players, and the fans all do the same then 2008/09 is going to be a time to remember. If the goal of promotion is not achieved then it won't be for the lack of trying. Whilst commenting on the Steve Bruce and Barry Rubery era, he said: "What's the point in spending the money and giving it a go for 90% of the season, only to lose your bottle at the end?"

"Dean Hoyle says that he will only ever tell the truth, and the truth may not always be pretty. So when he looked me in the eye and told me that he will do his utmost to get Huddersfield Town promoted next season, I know that will happen. When you get the chance to meet him, look him in the eye and witness for yourself the determination and truth looking back at you.

"Onward, upward and always forwards."
