BALLOONS - AN FA CUP TRADITION?

Posted on: Tue 29 Jan 2008

Those of you who saw Sheffield United's first goal against Manchester City in the FA Cup on Sunday may be surprised to hear that balloons have been causing havoc in matches for quite a long time now!

Back when Town played Arsenal in the 1930 FA Cup final, the sizeable crowd of 92,488 - which included the reigning King - were distracted from the game when a Zeppelin flew over Wembley Stadium. The fans immediately booed the airship for interrupting play and it must have distracted Clem Stephenson's side, as they went down to the Gunners 2-0!

On Sunday, City defender Michael Ball had a massive swing at a group of blue balloons instead of the ball in his penalty area, allowing United's Luton Shelton to slam the ball home. Let's hope Town's current squad doesn't suffer any similar problems at Stamford Bridge next month!
