RITCHIE: "WE MAINTAINED THE HIGH STANDARDS"

Posted on: Sat 04 Aug 2007

Andy Ritchie gave us his thoughts after this afternoon's game against Mansfield Town

"I'm very pleased with the result. We came here to put them under pressure, that was the game plan and that's what we did. Sometimes the players take things a bit too literally, but we can work on that and at least we didn't cause any of our own problems today. We didn't try anything silly; if the ball needed a foot putting through it, then we did it. I don't think that's ugly football - it's effective football. It was important that we maintained the high standards from Wednesday and we did that.

"The clean sheet is great. Matt will be particularly pleased and the back four, but that goes for everyone. We had a few mistakes early on that could have cost us, but for the most part we were very solid. They had one or two chances and Matt made some good saves and so did their keeper.

"We are pleased that we have only lost one of our games in pre-season because it breeds confidence. We should have beaten Rochdale on paper, but we were deservedly beaten but we've come here today for another stiff test and we approached the game the right way and we reaped the rewards.

The victory in midweek against Blackburn has really given the lads a big confidence boost and you'd expect that, but we've still got a long way to go. We will be working on specifics of how we set-up and team shape. I'll be getting them on the pitch and saying "This is where I want you. This is where you need to tuck in, etc". There is a lot of work and preparation still to do this coming week."
