HUCKNALL TOWN 1 HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 3
What was expected to be Town's toughest test of the pre-season so far looked to be turning into a stroll for Town's young side at Watnall Road until Hucknall put up a real fight in the second 45 minutes. Joe Skarz and Luke Beckett had given the Terriers a first-half lead but a Danny Mayman goal gave the home side hope of a draw until Danny Schofield's brilliant third to put the result beyond doubt.
Setting up in their normal 4-4-2 formation, the young Town side dominated the first-half and richly deserved their 2-0 lead at the interval. In truth, Hucknall could have been dead and buried had it not been for a couple of smart saves from the substitute goalkeeper.
Town threatened after just a couple of minutes through a quality Danny Schofield corner to the near post, with tall striker Lucas Akins getting to the ball first but only succeeding in heading the ball onto his marker's head, which in turn deflected over the bar for a corner.
The movement of Town's attacking players was too much for their part-time opponents, as was shown in the 8th minute when an intelligent run wide from winger Matthew Young, taking the full-back with him in the process, created space for Danny Racchi to advance forward unchallenged to the edge of the box before his shot went wide of the goalkeeper's right-hand post.
GOAL - A patient build-up from Town led to the opening goal after 14 minutes. Initially working the ball across the pitch for a number of minutes, centre-back Dave Mirfin picked out left-winger Danny Schofield with an accurate long pass to feet who in turn laid the ball back to full back Joe Skarz. The League One Apprentice of the Year had spotted a run from Luke Beckett and tried to pick him out with a long cross to the back-post, but instead succeeded in lobbing the home 'keeper from way out on the left-wing to put Town into the lead.
The goalkeeper's blushes were spared soon after as he was substituted, but his replacement looked particularly ill at ease with his kicking duties and the lack of distance he achieved with his ground clearances put his colleagues under consistent pressure for the remainder of the first 45 minutes.
However, his nervous kicking was superseded by several excellent saves that kept Hucknall in the game after the 20-minute mark. Danny Schofield had two opportunities to extend Town's lead in the middle of the half - flashing a cross-come-shot beyond the far post before hitting a Lucas Akins cross into the floor and over the bar - before the custodian was called into action for the first-time. More impressive play from Akins, dragging his marker wide before beating him and pulling the ball back, allowed Matthew Young to get a shot in from the edge of the box that the 'keeper did well to hold.
The goalie had to be alert again in the 27th minute after clever play from Luke Beckett released the ever-busy Akins free of his marker. He advanced before hitting a low left-footed shot that the goalkeeper saved with his legs. Aaron Hardy, who looked comfortable operating at centre-back all evening; distributing the ball effectively and reading the game well throughout, had fed Beckett a good pass that initially set up the move.
Matthew Young, who worked tirelessly all evening and showed real pace at times, then spurned a chance at the back post as he headed a great ball from fellow winger Schofield well over the bar before Hucknall had their first shot-in-anger after 37 minutes - a long range drive that went well over Matt Glennon's bar.
GOAL - Hucknall couldn't get the ball off Town during the whole half and it was no surprise when a well-worked short corner led to a second goal after 40 minutes. Skipper Andy Holdsworth picked the ball up in the corner off Schofield before sending a beautiful cross into the near post, where Lucas Akins' deft nod left the goalie stranded as Luke Beckett tapped the ball into the empty net from close range to make take his tally to three goals in as many pre-season games.
Half-Time: Hucknall Town 0 Huddersfield Town 2
The hosts had needed half time to come, but reappeared in the second-half with a renewed purpose thanks in no small part to the introduction of player-manager Andy Legg at full-back. The former Wales international was a calming influence for his team, with intelligent distribution of the ball to the impressive target-man Danny Bacon or speedy right-winger Reuben Wiggins-Thomas allowing Hucknall a foothold in the game.
Legg had also taken up goal-kicking duties and it was one of his long clearances that caused David Mirfin problems in the 57th minute. The ball dropped in behind Mirfin, who was used to attacking the shorter kicks from the goalkeeper, leaving Aaron Hardy to battle with Liam Hearns on the edge of the box before strike partner Danny Bacon forced Glennon into his first save of the match with a curling effort inside the left-hand post.
GOAL - Hucknall got a goal back after 64 minutes through an excellent finish by Danny Mayman. A ball in behind Joe Skarz allowed Hucknall winger Wiggins-Thomas to run onto the ball, with his low near-post cross being turned onto the post by Bacon. The loose ball broke to the edge of the box, where Mayman thumped it back first-time - just clipping Glennon's right-hand post as it hit the net.
Luke Malcher had been introduced by Andy Ritchie on the hour mark to replace the hard-working Akins and he almost instantly restored the two goal lead when he curled a Luke Beckett pass onto the Hucknall crossbar with the 'keeper beaten.
GOAL - Town did then restore the comfortable two-goal gap on the stroke of the 75th minute. The move started with an excellent run from Racchi, who burst inside before releasing Malcher down the left with a sweet pass. Luke's pass inside was left to run by Andy Holdsworth to Danny Schofield, who surprised everyone hitting a dipping shot from almost 30 yards that deceived the 'keeper as it flew into the top-right corner of the goal.
Other than a left-foot shot down the 'keepers' throat from Luke Beckett in the dying minutes, Schofield's strike was the final action of note in the game as the final quarter of an hour was contested in midfield.
