AFC EMLEY 0 HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 3

Posted on: Thu 19 Jul 2007

Everyone would have expected to win this opening pre-season friendly against AFC Emley, but travelling Terriers fans will no doubt be encouraged at the signs they saw in this game ahead of the coming League One campaign.

Goals from new signing Danny Cadamarteri, Luke Beckett and Matthew Young gave Town the deserved win against a spirited AFC Emley side at a packed, sun-kissed Welfare Ground.

New boys Malvin Kamara and Danny Cadamarteri impressed; Kamara with his willingness to take on his full-back and discipline in staying wide, with Cadamarteri showing excellent movement and genuine pace at times. The sizeable travelling army also got a taste of what to expect from an Andy Ritchie side - a team playing with genuine width that look to get the ball to the wingers at the first opportunity.

Kamara in particular looked threatening down the right, with Emley left-back Clark struggling to cope with his lightning pace and trickery on the ball. On the opposite flank, Danny Schofield saw less of the ball but used it effectively when given the opportunity.

The game was evenly poised at 0-0 after the first 45 minutes, with skipper Jon Worthington and Danny Schofield spurning Town's best chances.

First-year professional Mitchell Bailey impressed in the second-half, showing his excellent range of passing familiar to those who watched the Reserves regularly last term. Trialists Lee Snodin and Jack Kamara (son of former Bradford manager Chris and no relation to Malvin) also played parts in the game, looking lively and fit having trained with Town for a couple of weeks now.

Another positive for Town was several of the squad showing their versatility; James Berrett showed well playing in the uncustomary roles of right-back and central defence, with Andy Holdsworth looking similarly composed in the centre of defence during the second 45.

Perhaps surprisingly it was Simon Eastwood who was the first goalkeeper to be called into action on the night when he showed good reactions to tip over a header from Emley's Nathan Hazelden from a right-sided free kick after just 5 minutes of the game.

Town's first effort on target came from the lively Kamara, who struck the ball low across the ground from the right-hand corner of the penalty box straight at 'keeper Green.

Town's best move of the game so far came 5 minutes later when Danny Schofield sent an excellent near-post cross onto the head of Andy Booth, who in turn flicked the ball back to the edge of the D for Aaron Hardy to strike a shot - one which was straight at Green once more.

Danny Cadamarteri came close to opening his pre-season account when he turned his marker on the edge of the Emley box and whipped a powerfully struck shot just over the bar and into the gathered masses behind the goal.

Schofield went similarly close to his teammate ten minutes later when his free kick from 25 yards just sailed over the top-right hand corner of the home goal.

Town should have taken the lead on the half-hour mark through their energetic skipper Jon Worthington, when he headed over barely 5 yards out after an excellent deep cross from Schofield - who had worked the opportunity well with his left-sided partner Hardy.

Andy Booth had to be withdrawn with 5 minutes of the half remaining after a nasty clash of heads with Emley centre-back Nathan Hazelden. His place was taken on the field by Luke Beckett, with the Emley man able to return after some lengthy treatment.

Town had created by far the better chances in the opening 45 minutes, but the game was still goalless as the whistle went for half time.

Town (Second-Half)

GK Matt Glennon

DR Jack Kamara (Tom Clarke 80)

DL Joe Skarz

DC James Berrett (Andy Holdsworth 65)

DC David Mirfin

MR Malvin Kamara (Matthew Young 61)

ML Chris Brandon

MC Mitchell Bailey

MC Michael Collins

SC Luke Beckett (Luke Malcher 81)

SC Danny Cadamarteri (Lucas Akins 61)

GOAL - Town got the inevitable goal 7 minutes after the restart through a penalty. A great ball from Michael Collins released Chris Brandon down the left wing and he was chopped down by the centre-back in the area as he tried to switch the ball to his favoured right foot. Up stepped Danny Cadamarteri, who made it one-nil despite a valiant effort from Green in goal, who got a hand to the ball as it passed him low to his right.

James Berrett was showing his versatility by playing at centre-back in the second-half and it was he who prevented Glen Walton from getting a shot away in the Town box with an excellent sliding block 8 minutes after the goal.

From the resulting corner, Matt Glennon showed the form that made him the only ever-present last season with a fantastic double save at point blank range from two Emley attackers.

GOAL - Town extended their lead around the hour mark after some more good work from new-boy Cadamarteri. His run inside from the right-flank was too much for the Emley defenders and he found striker partner Luke Beckett in acres of space with a clever reverse pass. Far be it from the former Stockport and Sheffield United hit man to spurn a chance in front of goal and he dispatched the ball into the net to the 'keeper's right in typically comprehensive fashion.

A happy sight for Town fans was the introduction of Tom Clarke with 10 minutes remaining on the watch. His appearance ended his 9 month spell out of action through injury and he slotted in at centre-back with Andy Holdsworth, who had previously been deployed there, to switch to a more customary right-back.

GOAL - The final goal of the evening came with 7 minutes remaining after a positive run inside from Chris Brandon, combined with good runs from Malcher and Akins up front, created space for Matthew Young. He collected Brando's pass before coolly slotting the ball home into the goalie's bottom left corner from the edge of the box in what was the pick of the goals on the evening.

Andy Holdsworth hit the post late on following a typically excellent surge from Michael Collins into the box allowed for a low drilled cross to the far post and despite a couple of attempts from Lucas Akins, the score line was 3-0 to Town as the referee brought an end to the game.
