TOWN TARGET WILLIAMS
Town boss Andy Ritchie has today confirmed that Town are chasing Barnsley's 22-year old defender Robbie Williams.
Ritchie has agreed a fee with his former club for the left-sided player and talks are now ongoing between the two parties.
Town fans will be encouraged to hear that Williams has been a key part of two sides winning promotion from League One in the previous two-seasons - in 2005/06 with the Tykes and last season while on loan at Blackpool, when he scored a 30-yard free-kick against Yeovil Town at Wembley.
htafc.com got the first word with the Town boss today over the progression of the potential move.
"We've agreed a fee with Barnsley for Robbie", confirmed Ritchie. "It's now just a case of holding talks with him to try and agree a move.
"Robbie is exactly the type of player that we need. He can play either at left-back or on the left side of midfield and that is exactly what we're looking for at the moment."
Ritchie will know about the qualities that Williams offers better than most, with the Pontefract-born set-piece specialist having played a total of 78 times for the Tykes - most of which came during Ritchie's tenure at Oakwell.
Ritchie also confirmed to htafc.com that the money from the recent Gary Taylor-Fletcher transfer to Blackpool will be available to him in order to strengthen his squad further.
"Fletch's move to Blackpool has allowed us some more leeway when it comes to strengthening the squad."
