Anybody who came down to the Galpharm Stadium for tonight's Carling Cup Round Two fixture against Championship side Sheffield United will tell you that Stan Ternent's Huddersfield Town were desperately unlucky to lose this one-sided affair.

The Terriers took a deserved first-half lead through the excellent Michael Flynn (pictured) and created a host of other chances to extend the lead, but the visiting Blades will be in the third round draw after a quick-fire brace within three second half minutes to leave the watching Town faithful shell-shocked.

There were many positives to take out of the game - Jon Worthington was excellent in the engine room and Nathan Clarke was awarded the Man of the Match award by sponsors AGC Tools & Fixings, but it was not meant to be on the evening as Kevin Blackwell's side progressed.

Town started the game in a traditional 4-4-2 formation with 'keeper Glennon playing behind a back four of Williams, Captain Lucketti, Nathan Clarke and Holdsworth. Roberts moved to the left wing with Cadamarteri dropping into the right side, leaving Flynn to partner Worthington in central midfield and Beckett to partner Parker on his full debut for the Club up front.

'Robbo' mustered the first shot on target of the game inside three minutes, whipping a wide free-kick straight at Blades 'keeper Ian Bennett after fellow wide man Cadamarteri had been obstructed by Sun Jihai on the right side.

Town had started the game brilliantly and after five minutes tested the United shot-stopper again. More good build up play down the Huddersfield right allowed the lively Cadamarteri to cross into the box left-footed, with Roberts coming in deep to head the ball down towards the goal. It appeared Bennett turned the ball around the post, but referee Miller deemed that the ball had already gone dead and awarded a goal kick to the opposition.

Luke Beckett almost latched onto a clever pass from Roberts in the tenth minute, only to be denied by Bennett's sharp reactions off his line.

The visitors finally managed an attack in the 15th minute after the opening spell of Town dominance, but Dave Cotterill's right wing cross flashed across the face of Matt Glennon's goal and fell safely to Andy Holdsworth.

Nathan Clarke should have opened the scoring in the 20th minute; Chris Lucketti collected a deep Williams corner before cleverly lofting the ball towards the back post, where the elder Clarke brother flashed a free header wide of the far post from just ten yards out.

BOOKING - Darius Henderson was the first player to be booked on the evening after 25 minutes for jumping into Jon Worthington with the ball in the air. The impact was a heavy one, but in true fashion Town's midfield battler got straight back to his feet with no fuss.

The resulting free-kick fell to Michael Flynn 25 yards out and the midfielder was unlucky to see his well struck drive go just wide of Ian Bennett's right-hand post.

United responded two minutes later when Michael Tonge fed Dave Carney the ball on the edge of the box, with the Australian shooting inches wide on the turn.

GOAL - Town took a deserved lead in the 34th minute, with Michael Flynn netting his first in the famous Blue and White stripes. Town had earned another free-kick down the right side after Jihai body-checked Cadamarteri and Gary Roberts played a short free-kick to the central midfielder, who switched the ball onto his left and hit a strong shot from 25 yards that took a deflection on its way into the right side of Ian Bennett's goal.

The goal didn't stop the Town onslaught, with Danny Cadamarteri hitting a long range dipping drive over the United bar on the stroke of 36 minutes.

The Blades still carried their own attacking threat and Town old boy Jon Stead's deflected effort could only be parried by Matt Glennon a minute later, with Robbie Williams clearing up the danger.

Michael Flynn saved a certain equalising goal in the 40th minute; tricky winger Carney played a clever one-two with Darius Henderson to break into the Town box, but the midfielder slid full length at the ball to divert it away from the danger zone.

The Championship side had noticeably upped their tempo after falling behind, but Stan Ternent's side were more than equal to the challenge and went into the interval a goal to the good.

HALF-TIME: HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 1 SHEFFIELD UNITED 0

SUB - Sheffield United manager Kevin Blackwell made one change to his side during the interval, replacing Jon Stead with Danny Webber.

The game recommenced at the same furious pace and United had the first chance of the half; the lively Carney hitting a 15 yard snapshot straight at Matt Glennon in the 48th minute.

Town hit back immediately, with Keigan Parker slipping a clever reverse ball into the box for Gary Roberts to run onto. He hit a strong shot at goal from a very acute angle that looked to be sneaking in, but 'keeper Bennett did brilliantly to turn the box around the post.

In the 50th minute the ball was at the other end once again, with Cotterill's low ball from the right being flicked beyond the back post by Darius Henderson's outstretched foot.

Nathan Clarke ended a spell of head-tennis on the edge of the United box after a Gary Roberts free-kick in the 53rd minute, hitting a strong volley from the edge of the box that was always rising over the United bar.

Michael Flynn was visibly distraught not to have scored his second in the 57th minute. Keigan Parker did brilliantly to beat Kilgallon down the right before swinging in a brilliant cross; Flynn was charging in from deep to head the ball home, but Luke Beckett did not hear his call and flicked the ball wide of goal with his own head when back-peddling furiously.

Chris Morgan looked to get away with a forearm to the back of Jon Worthington's head in the 62nd minute, much to the anger of Town's manager and assistant manager Ternent and Jepson. Despite this, the Terriers were pressing for a second goal.

Nathan Clarke went very close to scoring with another header in the 68th minute in a carbon copy of his first-half chance. This time it was Gary Roberts cross from the right following a half-cleared corner that the defender headed wide of the right-hand post.

SUB - Sheffield made their second change on 69 minutes when Kyle Naughton replaced Dave Carney.

Keigan Parker was having a very impressive debut and hit a long range scorcher straight at the opposition goalkeeper in the 72nd minute. A minute later he was at it again, smashing the ball over the bar from a narrow angle.

Matt Kilgallon wasted the ball in a good crossing opportunity in the 76th minute but otherwise it was all Town.

SUB - Stan Ternent made his own change in the 77th minute, bringing Jim Goodwin on to replace Luke Beckett. The substitute joined Flynn and Worthington to shore up central midfield, with Parker moving out to the right side and Cadamarteri playing as a lone striker.

SUB - Kevin Blackwell made a final throw of the dice with an attacking 80th minute substitution, replacing full-back Derek Geary with striker Billy Sharp.

Robbie Williams made a vital tackle to deny Danny Webber a clear run at goal immediately following the change before Matt Glennon lost a high cross and the defence had to scramble clear.

GOAL - United equalised in the 82nd minute after a fortunate deflection gave Darius Henderson the ball in space inside the Town box, his shot proving to be too strong for Matt Glennon to palm away before nestling inside the Town goal.

GOAL - Dramatically the Blades scored again in the 84th minute through substitute Kyle Naughton and again, it had an air of luck about it. The ball was worked across to the right side of the area for the right winger and his shot deflected off the unlucky Gary Roberts, leaving Matt Glennon helpless as it drifted into the goal.

SUB - Stan Ternent immediately made an attacking change, replacing the excellent Worthington with Phil Jevons. This change saw Town switch back to 4-4-2, with Keigan Parker partnering the sub in attack.

The United fans suddenly found their voices again, but the brace of goals were cruel on the Terriers who had bossed the entire second half.

SUB - Malvin Kamara became Town's final substitute when he replaced Robbie Williams in the 88th minute. Ternent's side moved to 4-3-3, with Gary Roberts becoming a third attacker and Kamara operating as wide midfielder.

BOOKING - Sun Jihai was booked in added time for a cynical trip on Kamara down the right.

Matt Glennon joined the Town attack late on after we won a string of late corners and at one point Gary Roberts' low drive was deflected inches wide, but the visitors held on for a smash and grab victory.
