The Terriers showed terrific character at the Banks's Stadium this afternoon to come from two goals down and record their fourth consecutive away win against Walsall, courtesy of a late first-half brace from the legendary Andy Booth and a first professional goal from Liverpool loanee Martin Kelly.
An early brace from powerful Walsall striker Jabo Ibehre had given the Saddlers a deserved first-half lead, but Booth's 147th and 148th goals in Town colours restored parity going into the interval before the unlikely source of right-back Kelly's left boot gave Lee Clark's side all three points in the Midlands.
Town started the game in their recently successful 4-5-1 formation, with 'keeper Smithies protected by a back four of Williams, Butler, skipper Nathan Clarke and Kelly at right-back. Tom Clarke and Goodwin took up the holding midfield roles behind the more advanced Collins, with wingers Roberts and Cadamarteri tasked with supporting lone striker Booth in attack.
In their change strip of Centenary Gold for probably the final time, the Terriers started the game with their fans audibly cheering them on behind the goal of Alex Smithies. The unlikely source of the first shot on target was Town right-back Kelly in the 4th minute - the defender picked up a pass from Goodwin on the halfway line before embarking on a pacey dribble that took him past three players. Unfortunately, his cross-come-shot went straight into the hands of waiting custodian Gilmartin.
Cadamarteri then showed an early flash of skill a minute later, turning sharply past left-back Chris Palmer on the right flank before sending a deep cross behind for a goal kick.
Walsall then went close to opening the scoring with their first attempt at goal in the 7th minute. Winger Zaaboub drifted infield and played a fortunate one-two off the legs of Tom Clarke on the edge of the Town box before pulling a low shot inches wide of Smithies' right-hand post.
Town were soon on the attack again, with Collins latching onto a Booth knock-down before passing the ball to the right for Cadamarteri. The winger struck a powerful half-volley across the face of goal and Gilmartin was forced to palm the ball behind for a corner.
GOAL - The home side then took the lead in slightly lucky circumstances in the 14th minute through striker Jabo Ibehre. The Saddlers' forward Troy Deeney picked up a loose ball in the centre-circle before turning and driving at Andy Butler, eventually putting a pass down the line intended for his bulky strike partner; Ibehre's run had been tracked by Nathan Clarke, but in trying to block his eventual shot he only succeeded in deflecting the ball over the helpless Smithies and into the net.
A minute after the goal the Town defence failed to clear a long ball into the area and Deeney volleyed well over the bar, but Town hit back and a powerful snapshot from Jim Goodwin in the 16th minute forced the Walsall custodian into a low save down by his feet.
The game was very open at this point and the lively Zaaboub went close on a breakaway attack in the very next minute. A right wing cross from full-back Weston evaded everyone in the Town area before dropping to the Frenchman at the back post, who sent a powerful low volley towards goal - only for the recovering Goodwin to clear the ball off the line.
The winger didn't go as close with his weaker right foot in the 24th minute - he volleyed a right-sided cross from midfielder Bradley high over the stand behind the goal, resulting in ironic cheers from all four stands. In truth, his effort was more danger to cars on the M6 than to Alex Smithies' goal!
SUB - Lee Clark made an early change in the 28th minute, with Michael Flynn replacing Michael Collins.
GOAL - The home side doubled their advantage in the same minute, with Jabo Ibehre netting his second of the game. The former Leyton Orient forward did brilliantly to flick a long diagonal ball past Nathan Clarke and Andy Butler to create himself some space before spinning and thumping a powerful shot to Smithies' right side from the edge of the box.
Town tried to reply just before the half-hour, with Williams collecting a defensive header when 35-yards from goal and sending a rasping volley inches over the Walsall crossbar.
Walsall went close to a third goal in the 33rd minute when tall centre-back Gerrard nodded a Zaaboub corner wide of the far post from fifteen yards out.
Andy Booth required treatment to a head injury soon after as manager Clark urged his defence to keep a high line and the legendary striker should have done better with a header from an excellent Williams cross in the 41st minute, nodding the ball straight at the goalkeeper when looking to knock it down for teammate Flynn in the six yard box.
GOAL - Town got a crucial goal back in the 43rd minute, with striker Andy Booth netting his fifth of the season thanks to a goalkeeping howler from Rene Gilmartin. A big clearance up field from 'keeper Smithies found the reliable head of the target man, who directed the ball to the right for Danny Cadamarteri; his eventual low cross was volleyed low towards goal by the striker, where Gilmartin let the ball squirm under his body. The shot-stopper tried to stop the ball crossing the line, but the assistant referee correctly flagged for the goal as the ball had clearly gone over.
BOOKING - Walsall forward Troy Deeney was booked by referee Kettle in the 44th minute for a poor challenge on Tom Clarke by the touchline.
GOAL - Andy Booth then netteda quick-fire second goal to restore parity for the Terriers in the 45th minute. Gary Roberts played the ball off full-back Weston to win a left wing corner and Boothy was allowed to run unchecked by the Walsall defence to power home a typical back-post header from Jim Goodwin's deep delivery, much to the delight of the travelling hordes at the other end of the ground.
That speedy brace of goals meant that Town went into the interval back on level terms with their hosts, who had been on top in the game for almost the entire half of football. Despite this, it was the Town fans behind the goal that could be heard as both teams entered the tunnel.
HALF-TIME: WALSALL 2 HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 2
Both managers stuck with the same personnel for the start of the second 45 minutes but Lee Clark had changed the shape of his side to a 4-4-2 of sorts, with Jim Goodwin in a defensive midfield role behind the trio of Tom Clarke, Flynn and Roberts and Danny Cadamarteri joining Booth as an orthodox striker.
Town went very close to taking the lead for the first time in the game in the 50th minute after starting the second half brightly. Tom Clarke did well to win a header in midfield and Booth kept the ball moving forward to Roberts, who turned inside defender Smith onto his favoured left foot before sending a curling effort inches wide of the far post from the edge of the box.
The Terriers were making all the running in the second half sun and created another half-chance in the 55th minute when Robbo played a ball into the feet of substitute Flynn on the edge of the Walsall penalty area; he turned cleverly to make space for the shot, but scuffed his effort wide of goal.
Nathan Clarke had to be alert at the other end of the pitch a minute later, heading a dangerous Zaaboub corner behind with the lofty Gerrard lurking nearby.
Robbie Williams showed more great technique in the 58th minute, sending a 35-yard piledriver just wide of the left-hand post with Gilmartin scrambling across his line.
Jim Goodwin was next to try his luck from range, but his controlled drive was easy pickings for the goalkeeper.
GOAL - Town's excellent play was rewarded in the 63rd minute when Liverpool loanee Martin Kelly scored a memorable first goal in professional football. The move was patiently built through Town's midfield and just as it looked like Goodwin would pass the ball simply to the right side for Tom Clarke, he played a clever reverse pass into the feet of the right-back on the edge of the box. The 18-year old turned sharply onto his weaker left foot to deceive his marker before sending a low, curling shot into the bottom corner of the goal.
Alex Smithies pulled off an excellent flying save to deny former England international Ricketts an immediate equaliser - the big forward picked himself up after being tripped by Williams to send a curling 23 yard free-kick towards goal, which the Town 'keeper tipped over brilliantly.
Town had to be grateful to some excellent defensive work from Andy Butler a minute later when the ex-Scunthorpe centre-back brilliantly blocked a decent-looking shot from, Ibehre behind for a corner.
The Saddlers had fought back well after going behind, prompting Lee Clark to switch Town's shape to an orthodox 4-4-2. Roberts and Flynn became left and right wingers, with Tom Clarke partnering Goodwin in the centre of the park.
Ricketts tried his luck from another 25-yard free-kick in the 71st minute after Nathan Clarke had been penalised for handball, but this time he failed to test Smithies with his lofty effort.
Robbie Williams then struck his own free-kick from similar range in the 75th minute after Zaaboub had tripped
BOOKING - Rhys Weston was booked by referee Kettle a minute later after he unnecessarily trod on the back of Jim Goodwin's heels.
SUB - Walsall boss Hutchings then made a change in the 77th minute, replacing Ricketts with Alex Nicholls.
Andy Booth's goalward header from a right-wing cross was easily collected by the goalkeeper a minute later.
BOOKING - Danny Cadamarteri became the first Town player to be shown a yellow card in the 83rd minute after he let his studs show when entering a challenge with Anthony Gerrard. That booking was his fourth of the season.
BOOKING - He was soon followed into the book by Gary Roberts, who was shown his 6th yellow of the campaign for dissent.
SUB - Walsall made their second substitution in the 87th minute, with right-back Weston replaced by Richard Taundry.
SUB - Former Town player Dwayne Mattis replaced Mark Bradley for the Saddlers a minute later.
BOOKING - Jim Goodwin was shown his 14th yellow card of the season in the final minute of normal time for an off the ball foul on a Walsall player. From the resulting free-kick, Gerrard headed over the bar at the far post.
Walsall put some long balls into the Town box in the four minutes of added time, but the defence - ably assisted by Andy Booth - held firm to secure all three points.
