A scrappy first-half gave way to a dominant second for this afternoon at the Galpharm Stadium as Town easily progressed to the Third Round of the FA Cup. A brace from Phil Jevons (pictured) on his full debut sealed the win for Town, with a third goal from substitute Luke Beckett proving to be the icing on the cake.
Town kicked-off in a 4-4-2 formation, with 'keeper Matt Glennon behind the regular back four of Joe Skarz, David Mirfin, Nathan Clarke and Captain Frank Sinclair. Malvin Kamara and Danny Schofield occupied the right and left wings respectively with Ronnie Wallwork and Andy Holdsworth in the middle. Up front, the new duo of Andy Booth and Phil Jevons led the line.
Grimsby, who had recently been playing 4-4-2, started the game in a 5-3-2 formation with an obvious ploy of hitting former Tranmere target man Gary Jones whenever possible. Nathan Clarke was the Town defender being tasked to compete with the 6' 3" striker in the air.
At the other end, Andy Booth was holding up the ball brilliantly for Town.
Grimsby dangerman Ciaran Toner had the first shot on target in the game after 7 minutes, picking up a loose ball 25 yards out before unleashing a shot that Matt Glennon had to turn around his right-hand post for a corner.
The game was being contested fiercely contested in midfield, with many physical challenges flying in from both sides.
Andy Holdsworth had Town's first effort on goal after 16 minutes in what was probably the best move of the match so far. Andy Booth fed Malvin Kamara a low pass to feet and the speedy wingman played a one-two with overlapping full-back Frank Sinclair to get free at the byline. Malvin tried to pick out Phil Jevons with a low pullback but the ball ran to Holdsworth, who struck a low left-foot effort wide of the Grimsby right-hand post from the edge of the box.
Grimsby old-boy Jevons then troubled Mariners 'keeper Nick Montgomery with a looping header from a Frank Sinclair cross two minutes later, but his effort ended up on the top of the netting.
Great link up play between Booth and Jevons minutes later ended in Malvin Kamara drilling a fierce volley towards the Grimsby goal that Montgomery did well to parry over for a corner, from which Booth got above Nick Fenton to head the ball over the bar. It seemed somewhat ironic that Booth was dominating the aerial battle with Fenton so far, given that it was the defender's aerial prowess from set-pieces that had caused Town so many problems in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy defeat at Blundell Park in September.
BOOKING: Grimsby midfielder James Hunt was rightly booked on the half-hour mark for scything down Malvin Kamara just inside the away half.
Malvin Kamara then tormented left wing-back Tom Newey three minutes later, jinking one way and the other before unleashing another fierce shot that forced Montgomery to react brilliantly and turn the ball over the bar.
Frank Sinclair was overlapping to good effect and his excellent crosses were causing some panicky moments in the Grimsby area. Along with Malvin Kamara, Town were proving to be very effective on the right flank.
A great, high-tempo one-two between Sinclair and Jevons allowed the Town right-back to get into the box and unleash a low shot with three minutes to go to half-time, but a smart save from Montgomery denied the former Chelsea man his first goal in Town colours.

SUB - Grimsby boss Alan Buckley made a change during the interval, bringing on striker Andy Taylor for Peter Till. Taylor positioned himself on the left side of a front three alongside the central Jones and North on the right.
GOAL - Town took the lead after 53 minutes and it was new boy Phil Jevons who scored. A deflected free-kick from Ronnie Wallwork won Town a corner, which Andy Holdsworth played short to Danny Schofield before swinging it to the back post. Malvin Kamara headed the ball back across the 6-yard box where a scramble ensued, with Jevons hammering the ball home into the roof of the net at the far post to put Town ahead.
Holdsworth then got into the box to the right hand side of goal after playing a quick one two with the clever Jevons before pulling the ball back to Andy Booth on the penalty spot; the Town striker miss-controlled the ball and it ran to Danny Schofield, but his shot went way over the bar.
BOOKING: Tom Newey was then booked by referee Taylor after 57 minutes for a trip on Malvin Kamara from behind.
Andy Holdsworth hit a long-range shot straight at Nick Montgomery a minute later.
GOAL - Town got their second on 62 minutes later and it may have been the simplest goal that Phil Jevons has ever scored. Malvin Kamara was set free down the right side due to a great looping ball from Andy Holdsworth and he pulled a low ball back across goal, taking 'keeper Nick Montgomery out of the game and allowing Jevons to tap into an empty net from around two yards out for his second of the game.
Substitute Taylor then got free down the right for the away side before looping a high ball to the back post where Danny North saw his header scooped off the line by Matt Glennon.
SUB - On 66 minutes, Peter Bore came on for Ryan Bennett and Paul Bolland replaced Danny North as Alan Buckley tried to get his side back in the game.
Jevons could have completed his hat-trick with twenty minutes remaining after being released in on goal by Kamara, but defender Sam Hird did brilliantly to get back alongside the Town striker to block his shot as he entered the penalty area.
Great interplay between Schofield, Booth and Jevons then saw Ronnie Wallwork bend a shot onto the roof of the net after 72 minutes.
SUB - A minute later, Phil Jevons received a standing ovation and an embrace from his manager as he was replaced by Danny Cadamarteri.
The Town substitute looked in a determined mood and immediately went on a run down the left side before squaring the ball across the box for Schofield, who slightly miss-hit his shot at Nick Montgomery.
Cadamarteri replicated the run minutes later, with Kamara the recipient of the cross on this occasion. He tried to replicate his goal at Millwall by hitting the ball with the outside of his right foot into the far corner, but Nick Montgomery saved well to his right side.
SUB - Luke Beckett was then introduced to the game by Andy Ritchie after 81 minutes, coming on for Andy Booth.
GOAL - Town then made it 3-0 with five minutes leftwhen substitute Luke Beckett netted a rebound. Fellow substitute Danny Cadamarteri had been picked out on the edge of the box with a clever pass and hit the post with his right-footed effort, but Beckett was first to react and slotted the ball past the helpless 'keeper from 6-yards out.
SUB - Straight after the goal, Malvin Kamara was substituted - Michael Collins coming on in his place.
