Town's Carling Cup run came to a close at EwoodPark this afternoon against the Premiership's Blackburn Rovers. Two goals from Bellamy and one from Khizanishvili was enough to end Jacko's Cup dream despite Abbott pulling back a well-worked goal for Town. The Town boss will take a lot of pride in his side's performance this evening and they battled from start to finish, roared on by an massive following from across the Pennines.
Town earned the first corner of the game on 6 minutes after a period of good pressure from the Terriers. Good play by Danny Schofield in the area forced Ryan Nelson to put the ball behind. It was the former Brodsworth man who delivered the set-piece which Nathan Clarke came inches away from converting.
On ten minutes, the home side took the lead with their first attack through Craig Bellamy who scored his first goal for the home side. A neat one-two with Emerton saw the Welshman storm into the area and slot the ball down low into the bottom left of Rachubka's goal.
Booth was xcausing the defence all sorts of problems with his aerial ability and it was his flick to Pav which earned Town their second corner as, with Abbott hot on his heels, Neill was forced to put the ball behind.
On 19 minutes Danny Schofield received the first yellow card for remonstrating with the referee after Probert had missed what appeared to be a blatant handball.
Town won a free-kick on the edge of Rovers' area on 22 minutes when referee Probert spotted a handball by Savage. Pawel Abbott took the set-piece and curled it, right footed round the wall but saw his effort fly inches wide of Friedel's right-hand post.
Andy Holdsworth came to Town's rescue with a last-ditch tackle midway through the half when John McCombe was rounded by Bellamy and the former Newcastle man
The home side won their first corner on 31 minutes and skipper Nelson connected well with Bentley's but, fortunately for the Terriers, he drove his header wide.
Town had their best opportunity to level the scores on 33 minutes when Pawel Abbott connected with a great ball from Andy Holdsworth but Town's top marksman could not find the target with his header.
Moments later Rachubka was alert to more danger from the Rovers frontmen after Bellamy headed down to Dickov whose weak, low effort failed to beat the sprawling Rabs who had rushed from his goal.
With five minutes of the half remaining Abbott tried a 30 yard screamer which flew over Friedel's bar.
The home side had already been caught offside on a handful of occasions when Bellamy stormed through. The striker was booked for protesting.
Abbott had another chance soon after when he latched onto another flick from the irrepressible Booth but the striker's spectacular volley flew well over the bar.
Bellamy was quickly followed into the book by strike partner Dickov who was booked for putting the ball in the back of the net after the whistle had gone for offside.
And there was drama at the death when Danny Adam played a short back pass to Rachubka. Fortunately Nathan Clarke was on hand to hammer the ball out from the penalty spot with Bellamy and Dickov lurking.
Half Time: Blackburn Rovers 1 Huddersfield Town 0
Peter Jackson made his first change of the evening replacing Junior Mendes with Chris Brandon.
Town were immediately on the offensive and almost scored with a move which bettered any in the opening 45 minutes. After a neat 1-2 between Andy Holdsworth and Pav and then Pav and Worthington, the Town skipper hit a vicious drive which flew over the Rovers bar.
The visitors then won a corner after sub Brandon had chased a lost cause and Andy Holdsworth had his cross deflected behind.
There was drama at the other on 49 minutes when Bellamy played a neat one-two with Emerton, forged into the area through and rifled in an effort which Rachubka did superbly well to gather at the second attempt.
Town won another corner on 53 minutes and Booth had his header cleared from danger by defender Neill after the big striker had latched onto Danny Schofield's set-piece
On 55 minutes Town had another good opportunity to level the scores when Boothy latched onto Brandon's ball after nicking it off the foot of Nelsen. The Town talisman crossed for the unmarked Schofield in the centre but the midfielder mis-controlled and the chance passed.
The home side then scored again through Khizanishvili on 60 minutes when he headed home Bentley's corner.
Town retaliated immediately and first Abbott then Schofield had shots blocked in the area.
On 67 minutes Emerton was booked for a foul on Brandon. Tony Carss took the resulting set-piece and found John McCombe at the back post but the defender's header was easily claimed by Friedel.
On 71minutes Pederson replaced Emerton
Nathan Clarke made a superb last-ditch tackle to to divert the ball away from the onrushing Dickov.
The home side pushed for a third and on, 77 minutes a sliding Dickov was inches away from connecting with Bellamy's cross at the back
On 78 minutes Booth was replaced by Gary Taylor- Fletcher and Danny Schofield was replaced by Mark Hudson. Fletch made an immediate impression and, after chasing a ball into the corner he laid the ball off the Brandon. The substitute played a reverse ball to Abbott who, once in the area, made no mistake and pulled one back for the Terriers.
Soon after however, Bellamy added a third for the home side when he collected a neat through ball, rounded McCombe and initially faked a shot before beating Rachubka with a low drive.
Hughes then made a double substitute with Michael Gray being replaced by Aaron Mokoena and Kuqi replacing Dickov.
In the first minute of stoppage time Abbott attempted the audacious and tried to chip Friedel from 35 yards.
