NETTERRIERS REACH FINAL

Posted on: Mon 23 Jun 2008

The Huddersfield Town netTerriers reached the final of a national football competition held at Preston this weekend.

After a season of disappointing defeats, the netTerriers drew 0-0 with Oldham supporters, then beat title holders Preston 1-0 (scorer Gee) before finishing off the group stage with a resounding 4-1 victory against Burnley (scorers Solano, Parkin, Smith and Taylor) to top their group in the 'National Football Museum Tournament' held in Preston on Saturday.

A 1-1 draw against Crewe in the semi-final was settled with a penalty shoot-out, Heywood saving one for the netTerriers and watching two others blaze wide, whilst Solano, Cocks and Parkin converted for the netTerriers to secure a 3-0 victory, setting up an all Yorkshire final against Barnsley, who had topped the other group, which also contained Crewe, Port Vale & Tranmere representatives.

The Huddersfield Town supporters went ahead early on in the final through a Parkin goal, only to concede a bizarre deflected goal to set up a tense second half, eventually losing out to a second Barnsley goal in what was largely considered an effort that should have been given offside in amongst other strange refereeing decisions!

The netTerriers squad enjoyed the day wholeheartedly and were lauded by the Preston supporting hosts for the positive fashion in which they represented Huddersfield Town, in what was a very well organised tournament played in almost gale force conditions.

Obvious disappointment at losing in the final was tempered by the display of squad sprit throughout the day, which bodes well for the 2008-2009 season, scheduled to kick off with a home game against Stockport Fans Football Club on the morning of the Town vs. Stockport season opener.

And if you're visiting Preston, don't forget to look out for a picture of some proud Town fans holding up their runners up medals which will be on show in the National Football Museum sometime soon!
