TOWN UNDER-18s 2 LEEDS UNITED 1

Posted on: Tue 04 May 2010

Graham Mitchell's under-18 side came away with the bragging rights after a 2-1 home victory over local rivals Leeds United in the FA Premier Academy League on Saturday.

Town took the lead after 25 minutes when winger Aidan Chippendale picked up the ball on halfway and drove at the Leeds defence; he eventually slid a pass through to onrushing midfielder Chris Atkinson, who placed the ball past the advancing goalkeeper to put his side ahead.

Leeds equalised on the hour mark from a corner, but the young Terriers were not to be denied and substitute Shane Birtles (pictured) netted the winning goal ten minutes from time. The visiting custodian failed to claim a Town cross and the striker showed good awareness to pounce on the rebound and tap the ball home.

"We played very well in the first-half, but not as well in the second," Academy Manager Graham Mitchell told htafc.com.

"The lads have been playing very well recently without picking up the results we deserve, so it was good to see them get the rub of the green during the second-half. However, we created a number of chances in the first 45 minutes and could have been much further ahead at the interval."

Town's Team (4-3-3):

Lloyd Allinson; Greg Pearson, Liam Ridehalgh, Leigh Franks (c), Jordan Sinnott; Israel Johnson, Chris Atkinson, James Spencer; Aidan Chippendale (David Melling 75), Michael McCaffery (Shane Birtles 46), Warwick Charlton

Unused Subs: Jordan Porter, Adam Colton, Dominic Dickinson
