MANCHESTER CITY 2 TOWN UNDER-18s 1

Posted on: Mon 26 Apr 2010

Town's under-18 side gave as good as they got in a Roses derby against a very strong Manchester City side on Saturday afternoon, but eventually lost by a single goal.

Town fell behind barely a minute into the game when Ahmad Benali intercepted a sloppy throw-in before placing a shot past Lloyd Allinson, but Graham Mitchell's side soon recovered and gave as good as they got for the remainder of the half.

On another day first year scholar Michael McCaffery could have scored a hat-trick, but the young striker was out of luck against City and it was the hosts who doubled their advantage with ten minutes of the game remaining through Emerick Hippias.

However, the Terriers did net a goal with five minutes remaining when winger Aidan Chippendale (pictured) netted his seventh goal of the FA Premier Academy League season. The talented wide-man received a pass from full-back Aidan D'Arcy before beating two City players and smashing the ball into the roof of the net from 20 yards out.

Academy Manager Graham Mitchell was delighted with the performance of his young side:

"We were terrific on Saturday; Manchester City are very strong at under-18 level and their side contained many youth internationals from different countries, but we deserved something from the game and on another day we could have scored at least three more times."

The Town Academy received some good news late last week when under-16 midfielder Matt Crooks was given the all-clear after a scan on his injured knee, which means he will return with the squad for next pre-season. Meanwhile, defender Adam Field is on the road to recovery from his ankle injury.
