Town's under-18 team lost their final FA Premier Academy League game of the season at Stoke City this morning, but could count themselves extremely unlucky not to get anything from the game after a tremendous performance.
The home side took the lead five minutes into the second-half with a shot that deflected off the back of a Town defender and looped over Simon Eastwood in goal, but Chris Howarth's men immediately equalised after a good set-piece routine.
Right-back Jack Hunt floated a long free-kick into the Stoke area and striker Danny Barlow managed to flick the ball into the path of substitute James Spencer, who showed great composure to slip the ball under the advancing goalkeeper and into the net.
The Terriers had a couple of good chances to score following that goal, but Spencer and Lewis Nightingale put one-on-one opportunities wide of goal after great build-up play. Devastatingly, centre-back Liam Ridehalgh tripped a Stoke forward in the penalty area with two minutes of the game remaining and a Stoke player converted the spot-kick to rob Town of all the points.
Despite the result, former Town midfielder Dean Gorre - now a member of the Stoke coaching staff - remarked that Howarth's side were 'the best side he has seen this season in terms of playing good, passing football.'
