MIDDLESBROUGH 2 TOWN U-18s 3
The under-18s completed an impressive FA Premier Academy League double over Middlesbrough at the weekend thanks to a brace from striker Danny Barlow (pictured) and a goal from Jack Hunt.
Town started the game in Teesside in an attacking 4-3-3 formation but the game was goalless at half-time. Hosts Boro started the game well but made no real opportunities despite their possession and eventually the Terriers got themselves into the game, creating a couple of half-chances before the interval.
Chris Howarth's side started very brightly after the break and went ahead on the hour mark. Striker Heagney closed down the Middlesbrough left-back and forced him into a bad infield pass that Luke Williams intercepted; the midfielder's shot from the edge of the box was only parried by the home custodian and striker Danny Barlow followed up to put the Terriers into the lead.
Middlesbrough equalised two minutes later after capitalizing on a defensive slip, but the Terriers restored their lead on the 70 minute mark with Barlow grabbing a second. The goal came about through more good work from strike partner Heagney; he collected a pass from Tom Jackson before spinning his marker and beating two more players. His pull-back from the left wing was headed home at the far post by the Barnsley-based striker.
Town confirmed the three points five minutes later by scoring a third. Tom Jackson's great run from defence ended with a cross from the left wing which was met with a brilliant diving header from midfielder Jack Hunt, who had got between the two Boro centre-halves.
Middlesbrough scored a second with ten minutes left but the Terriers - who had two under-16 players on the pitch by this point - held onto the ball in a way that belied their years to ensure the result.
With under-18 manager Graham Mitchell currently on first-team duty, under-16 boss Chris Howarth took the side and he told htafc.com that he was delighted with the performance.
"Middlesbrough have a lot of good players and is a hard place to travel, so I'm very pleased to come away with the win," Chris told the official club website.
"We watched a DVD of our 2-0 win over them at Storthes Hall earlier in the season in the build-up to the game and setup accordingly and it worked really well. The lads worked very hard in training all week long and fully deserved their win."
With Chris Pert, Curtis Roberts, Lewis Nightingale and Daniel Broadbent all injured Howarth gave under-18 debuts to under-16 players Aiden Chippendale and Ryan Watson.
Chris continued: "Both lads have had a very good season and it was a good opportunity for them at this level. More under-16 lads will be involved against Stoke on Tuesday and we'll be looking to finish the season on a high."
