Town succumbed to a heavy defeat at the hands of an impressive Manchester City side in their FA Premier Academy League fixture last weekend, with the hosts securing their Group C title with these three points.

Our reserve side that recorded an impressive 1-0 victory over Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park three days before this under-18 game had compromised many of the second-year scholars and only two started for the Academy side at the weekend.

2008 League One Apprentice of the Year Daniel Broadbent was missing with an ankle injury sustained in that Reserve win as was Tom Jackson, but the good news for the Academy this week was that neither injury has turned out to be as bad as was first feared.

As it was, the young Town side were outplayed on the day by City's host of internationals - with City scoring their first goal after just 12 minutes and kicking on from there. The City goals came from Abdi Ibrahim, Vladimir Weiss, David Ball and a brace from Alex Nimley-Tchuimeni.

Under-18 boss Graham Mitchell is looking for a positive response from his team in the remaining three games of the season.

"Sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and admit that you were outplayed and this game was a case of that," the former Town centre-back admitted.

"As it is, it has been a season of positives for the Academy and I'm not looking to linger on this result. All credit to Manchester City who secured their group title with this result, but I will be looking for our lads to respond to this and put in some good performances in our last three games of the season."
