Town's under-18 side turned in an excellent performance in a very entertaining local derby at Leeds United last weekend, coming away with a deserved win thanks to goals from midfielder Stephen Brook (pictured) and a fourth of the season from James Spencer.

The home side took the lead when their left-winger slid the ball into the Town goal after just 18 minutes, but Graham Mitchell's side responded excellently and were themselves ahead 12 minutes later.

Former Town centre-back Mitchell lined his side up in an attacking 4-3-3 formation for kick-off, with first-year striker Danny Barlow playing just behind the front two of Spencer and League One Apprentice of the Year Danny Broadbent. This made for a very open, entertaining game between two good footballing sides.

After United had opened the scoring, Brook equalised two minutes later. Barlow picked up the ball in the final third of the pitch before embarking upon a mazy run, beating three Leeds players on his way to the by-line where he drilled it low across the face of goal for the midfielder to turn home from close range at the far post.

Tall striker Spencer - who is still eligible for the under-16s this season - then scored the goal of the game on the half-hour mark. Picking up the ball in a deep position, James carried it forward around ten yards before chipping the goalkeeper with his weaker left foot when still around 20 yards from goal.

The Terriers defended brilliantly for the remainder of the game and had a couple of chances to extend their lead, but had to be thankful to 'keeper Simon Eastwood - a late replacement for Alex Smithies after the England under-18 'keeper picked up a knock to the ankle - as he made an excellent one-on-one save when a Leeds striker broke through on goal.

Mitchell told htafc.com that he was delighted with the performance from his team.

"It was a good footballing game and both sides played well - it was a very open game. Both sides looked to pass the ball and there was that little bit of bite to the game that you would expect in a local derby.

"We didn't play well in the first meeting between the two sides back in October, but we have improved since then and I think it showed. I'm very pleased for the players as they got the result they deserved.

"Our team contained quite a few first-year scholars and they have made a big progression this season. Physically this league can be a bit of an eye-opener, but they are progressing well and that bodes very well for next season."
