TOWN UNDER-18s 1 BARNSLEY 1
A second goal of the season from young striker James Spencer gave Town's under-18 side a share of the spoils against opponents Barnsley at Storthes Hall last weekend, but Graham Mitchell's side deserved to win the game after outplaying their Yorkshire rivals.
Spencer - still an under-16 player - netted again in only his fifth start at this level as Town had a large majority of the play in horrible conditions at the training ground, but his side could not find a winning goal.
The 60th minute goal leveled the scores after the visitors had taken a 35th minute lead through a 30-yard wind-assisted effort and came through a good passing move that ended with Spencer side-footing home a good Curtis Roberts (pictured) ball across the face of the six-yard box.
First year professional Simon Eastwood made an appearance in goal for Town, completing his return from the foot fracture that has kept him in the sidelines for over two months. 'Easty' had no chance with the Barnsley goal, but otherwise acquitted himself very well despite having very little to do.
Under-18 boss Mitchell told htafc.com that he thought his side deserved the three points following a good performance.
"I'm very pleased with the way in which the lads played, especially given the horribly blustery conditions up at Storthes Hall," the former Town centre-back explained.
"We had around 80 percent of the play and apart from their goal, Barnsley had no other chances of note.
"We defended very well throughout the game, with our centre-back pairing of Spencer Harris and Leigh Franks impressing in particular."
Mitchell was without goalkeeper Alex Smithies and defender Shane Killock, both of whom were on first-team duty at Oldham Athletic. Midfielders Lewis Collinson and Stephen Brook were rested having featured in an under-17 game during the week, but are both expected to be fit for next weekend's tough-looking trip to Liverpool.
