TOWN U-18 1 BIRMINGHAM 2
Town goal: Spencer Harris 22 (pen)
Birmingham goals: Jamie Sheldon 83, Jake Jervis 90 (pen)
Town's under-18 side was cruelly beaten at the Galpharm Stadium this evening having led for the majority of this FA Youth Cup Third Round game. Midfielder Spencer Harris put the Terriers ahead in the first-half with a coolly taken penalty, but Tom Jackson was visibly distraught after conceding a spot-kick at the other end which allowed Birmingham to snatch victory at the death. Graham Mitchell could be proud of his side, who defended brilliantly throughout the game and who didn't deserve to be knocked out of England's premier youth competition at this stage.
Mitchell set his side up in a regulation 4-4-2 formation as the game commenced, with recent first-team debutant Alex Smithies in goal protected by a back four of (from left to right) Tom Jackson, Danny Codman, Leigh Franks and Dave Pickering. Spencer Harris and Jack Hunt operated in the centre of midfield, with wingers Luke Durham and Liam Ridehalgh on the right and left wings respectively. Top scorer Daniel Broadbent was partnered up front by first-year scholar Danny Barlow.
Centre-back Leigh Franks had the first shot of the game within a minute, volleying a loose ball just wide of the Birmingham right-hand post after Daniel Broadbent's shot had been blocked on the edge of the area.
Both sides were strong in the challenge in a cagey opening ten minutes, but Broadbent showed what a danger his raw pace was when he easily outstripped Blues left-back Shaun Timmins in a race onto a Town clearance before ambitiously trying to lob 'keeper Dean Lyness from around 35 yards. The ball may have drifted wide, but the away defence could consider themselves warned.
Birmingham midfielder Jordon Mutch mustered the first shot on target of the game after twelve minutes, although his 25-yard daisy cutter was never going to trouble England under-18 goalkeeper Smithies in the Town goal.
Both number nines were impressing in the early stages - Danny Broadbent seemed to be key to every Town attack, whereas Birmingham's Robert Gradwell was using his height to good effect at the other end of the pitch - holding up the ball reasonably well despite the close attentions of the physical Franks.
Good interplay down the Town right wing between Jack Hunt, Luke Durham and Spencer Harris in the 20th minute allowed the latter to get a shot away from 25 yards; unfortunately his effort curled way over the bar, much to the Harris' disgust.
Town then won a penalty two minutes later; a clever pass from left winger Liam Ridehalgh put the speedy Broadbent through on goal, but as he entered the area he was sandwiched by two defenders. Centre-back Daniel Preston was the man reprimanded by the referee, but he was not even cautioned for the challenge from behind.
GOAL - Regular penalty taker Spencer Harris stepped up and slotted home his third goal of the season - all kicks from 12 yards - by sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and placing the ball into the bottom right corner to give the young Terriers the lead.
Shortly afterwards, Ridehalgh put a header over the Birmingham bar after he beat the opposition goalkeeper to a Luke Durham cross.
Birmingham were clearly shaken by the goal and struggled to cope as Town flooded forward in the next ten minutes. Right winger Durham was constantly involved and his skill was causing his full-back a few issues.
Alex Smithies majestically plucked a free-kick out of the air after 29 minutes and his accurate, long kick immediately released Danny Barlow down the left channel. He cut inside his defender brilliantly, but slammed his right-foot shot straight at goalkeeper Dean Lyness.
Town right-back Dave Pickering made one brilliant clearing header when Birmingham looked for a direct ball in behind him with the interval approaching, but the game turned into a battle for midfield dominance in the latter stages of the half and no real chances were created by either side. The lively Broadbent was harshly adjudged offside from one Jack Hunt through-ball with a minute left after making a brilliant arcing run, but Town were still a goal to the good as the half came to a close.
Half-Time: Huddersfield Town 1 Birmingham City 0
The same 22 players that finished the first half started the second and Birmingham enjoyed a decent spell of possession early on. Jordon Mutch snatched at one shot from the edge of the box, sending the ball rocketing over Smithies' bar after 51 minutes, but Town defended well - Franks and Codman leading by example at centre-back.
Another having a good game for Town was right-back Dave Pickering, who was covering his central defenders brilliantly from right back and using his pace to very good effect when attacking down the flank.
Codman almost got on the end of a Jack Hunt corner in the 54th minute as Town looked to extend their advantage, but Birmingham created their first genuine chance of the game just before the hour mark when a ball in behind Tom Jackson allowed the diminutive winger Dean Lea into the box with the ball. 'Jacko' got back brilliantly to get a foot in and Leigh Franks blocked the follow-up shot from Jamie Sheldon with his face! From the resultant corner, away Captain David Joyce planted a solid header towards the near post that Pickering cleared off the line.
Birmingham continued to enjoy possession, but Town created a real chance on the break thanks to some great play in midfield from Spencer Harris. The goalscorer robbed an opponent of the ball before out-muscling him and releasing Danny Broadbent in on goal. The striker advanced to the edge of the box and tried to slide the ball home, but 'keeper Lyness made an excellent block with his legs and the loose ball was cleared to safety.
SUB - Graham Mitchell made Town's first change of the evening after 65 minutes, bringing on midfielder Lewis Nightingale for Danny Barlow. Nightingale went straight into the hole just behind Danny Broadbent that Barlow had been occupying.
SUBS - Birmingham immediately made their own changes, bringing on Luke Hubbins and Jake Jervis for Aaron Moses-Garvey and Dean Lea.
Birmingham right-back Jack Rutter sent a speculative effort way over the bar of the impressive Smithies with quarter of an hour remaining as the away side struggled to get past the solid Town defence - a feature of which was the dominating performance of Leigh Franks.
Town then hit the woodwork twice from a Jack Hunt corner; the original ball in being crashed against bar by Danny Codman at the far post before the goalkeeper blocked a follow-up, only for Liam Ridehalgh to slam the ball against the post from an acute angle.
SUB - After 82 minutes, Jack Hunt was replaced in midfield by Luke Williams.
GOAL - Birmingham equalised after 83 minutes through Jamie Sheldon. Town had looked comfortable in defence all evening but sub Hubbins collected a right wing throw in and whipped a deep cross into the box, where the striker volleyed home from close range with his right foot past a helpless Alex Smithies.
A great cross from Liam Ridehalgh gave Codman a half-chance to head home with added time approaching, but the game was destined to go to extra time on this coldest of winter evenings.
However, the away side won a penalty a minute into added time; as striker Gradwell entered the Town box after receiving a pass from Hubbins, he was upended by a devastated Tom Jackson.
GOAL - The referee awarded the penalty and substitute Jake Jervis stepped up to slot the ball home past the diving Smithies to win the game.
