Rovers Goal: Josh Macauley 26

Town Goal: Daniel Broadbent 16, 72

Town's under-18 side will now host Birmingham City in the third round of the FA Youth Cup sponsored by E.ON after defeating Tranmere Rovers in tonight's game at Prenton Park. The game looked in the balance after Daniel Broadbent's goal was cancelled out by an equaliser in the first-half, but Broadbent grabbed a second to win the fixture in a thoroughly professional second-half showing from Graham Mitchell's team.

The game got underway 15 minutes after the scheduled start time of 7pm after Town's coach was delayed en-route to the ground. 'Keeper Alex Smithies - fresh from half a game for the England under-18 side the previous evening - was protected by a back four of Dave Pickering, Leigh Franks, Daniel Codman and left-back Tom Jackson, who made a welcome return from the suspension that kept him out of the first round victory over Hartlepool. The trio in midfield was Spencer Harris, Lewis Nightingale and Jack Hunt with Stephen Brook and Curtis Roberts either side of Captain Danny Broadbent up front.

The match began at a furious pace and it was Town's Spencer Harris who had the first effort on goal in the fourth minute. The midfielder picked up a loose ball inside the centre circle and showed good awareness to spot Tranmere 'keeper McWeeney off his line. Unfortunately for Town, his shot drifted just over the home crossbar.

Both sides were passing the ball in a crisp manner, aided slightly by the damp Prenton Park playing surface. One ploy that Alex Smithies was using was to aim for the tall Stephen Brook with his dead balls, as he towered over right-back Luke Denson; one such kick and flick-on gave Jack Hunt a chance on the volley from just outside the box in the 8th minute, but his effort went wide of the 'keeper's right-hand post.

Diminutive Tranmere number eleven Ryan Fraughan tried his luck from 30-yards with what was Tranmere's first effort on goal in the 12th minute but his effort went miles over Smithies' bar. Rovers were playing three up front just like Town and their obvious strength was the physical presence of their forwards; however, the Town defence was coping admirably.

GOAL - The Terriers took the lead in the 16th minute thanks to an excellent strike from Daniel Broadbent; hissecond goal of the FA Youth Cup campaign coming at the ground where he made his full debut for Town. A long dead ball from Alex Smithies ended up at the feet of the powerful striker on the left wing and he advanced to the edge of the box before cutting inside. 'Broady' had a lot of teammates available in support looking for a pass, but instead he brilliantly smashed the ball past the Tranmere custodian at his near post to give Town the lead.

A very clever pass from the lively Harris then almost presented Curtis Roberts with a chance to score three minutes later but the goalkeeper came off his line quickly to smother the ball, but Town were looking far more composed than their hosts for the evening and were using the width of the pitch to good effect.

GOAL - Tranmere then equalised in the 26th minute through their top scorer Josh Macauley. The nippy striker was playing down the left side this evening and cut inside a Town defender onto his right foot before calmly sliding the ball past Alex Smithies from just inside the box to restore parity.

Terry Gornell turned a defender cleverly on the edge of the Town box three minutes later but hit his fierce right-foot drive straight at Alex Smithies.

Town tried to fight back, with Spencer Harris working the goalkeeper in the 33rd minute - after which the away side began to boss possession once more.

SUB - Tranmere left-back Aaron Cresswell had visibly been struggling with what looked like a thigh injury for around ten minutes after being hit by a Curtis Roberts cross and he was replaced by Louis Corrigan in the 43rd minute.

Tranmere could have taken the lead with a minute to go to half-time after Fraughan got free down the left-hand side, but his low cross into the box was eventually turned over the bar by Mike Blundell.

Referee Wright then brought a battling first-half to a close with the scores level. Both sides had looked fairly dangerous at times during the half, but neither had seriously tested the opposition goalkeeper before or after their goal. The game was definitely in the balance and it all boded towards an intriguing second-half.

Half-Time: Tranmere Rovers 1 Huddersfield Town 1

SUB - Graham Mitchell made one change during the interval, with winger Luke Durham coming on for Curtis Roberts on the Town right-side.

Durham immediately went on a pacy and skilful run down the wing, earning a free-kick from sub Corrigan that led to another, more central set-piece after a scything challenge on Danny Broadbent. Unfortunately, Dave Pickering lofted his free-kick way over the bar.

Every time Danny Broadbent picked up the ball, he showed real purpose and on-looking first-team manager Andy Ritchie must have been impressed when the speedy striker easily beat a centre-back with a turn of pace in the 56th minute before advancing to the edge of the box and forcing a good save out of 'keeper McWeeney.

Alex Smithies had to be alert when a Tranmere cross took a wicked deflection off Lewis Nightingale and almost dropped in at his near post after 63 minutes, tipping the ball over the bar.

Town were son top of their opponents in the opening 20 minutes of the second-half - forcing a succession of corners - but Tranmere were a threat on the break as Josh Macauley showed in the 68th minute; Dave Pickering getting back to clear just in time.

BOOKING - The first yellow card of the game went to Tranmere's Tom Beahon in the 69th minute for a crude challenge from behind on Jack Hunt.

Hunt dusted himself down and played a great ball in behind the Tranmere defence for Stephen Brook to run onto with twenty minutes left, but centre-back Ash Taylor did brilliantly to get back alongside the tall Town winger as he looked destined to score.

GOAL - However, it didn't take long for Town to actually find the back of the net as Danny Broadbent registered his second of the game after 72 minutes. It was a quick piece of thinking from Alex Smithies that led to the goal; the England under-18 'keeper claiming a cross before getting up and immediately kicking the ball long where Ryan Mitchell misjudged it, allowing Broadbent in on goal. The striker made no mistake when finishing, placing the ball beyond the reach of McWeeney's left hand but just inside the post to give Town the lead again.

SUB - Tranmere made their second change in the 76th minute, replacing Mike Blundell with Dave Wilson.

Spencer Harris played a clever one-two with Nightingale to get inside the box a minute later but saw his left-foot drive deflect off a Tranmere defender for a corner. From that set-piece, a good knock-down from Stephen Brook almost allowed Broadbent to seal his hat-trick from close range but a defender did well to clear.

Another great ball over the top from Jack Hunt almost got Lewis Nightingale in on goal with ten minutes left but the goalkeeper reacted quickly enough to snuff out the chance before substitute Wilson warmed the palms of Alex Smithies with a long range volley.

BOOKING - Tom Jackson became the first Town player booked with three minutes remaining when he tried to clear the ball, only for striker Josh Macauley to nip the ball away and get a boot to the leg instead.

BOOKING - Stephen Brook then followed Jackson into the book after he wasted time in the 90th minute.

The final minutes were far from frantic, with an apparently fitter Town side cleverly seeing the final minutes out and progressing to the third round of the FA Youth Cup sponsored by E.ON.
